For many years now I've had the idea of producing a documentary telling the story of flamenco in the United States: how it got started here, who were the people responsible for bringing this foreign art into our culture, what was driving them to express themselves using this uniquely hybrid form of communication.
Well, two years ago I wrote my first grant in support of its production and I received some funds from the Heinz Endowments (THANK YOU Heinz!!), which enabled us to, very modestly, start shooting in the Washington DC area. Since then, we've got a second Heinz grant and a Pittsburgh Foundation grant, plus some funds from a fundraising event we organized last fall. So far, we've shot in Madrid, Spain; Washington DC, Lancaster, and Philadelphia; and we are currently pre-producing a 5-day shoot in Chicago in June, and a 3-day shoot in NYC in July... and that's where YOU come into play! We still need some funds to complete our summer production in NYC, and we need your help... please! The production crew will be traveling to New York to shoot the studio performances and interviews and we are still a bit short of cash.

Consider supporting this project as we move along in the production process. We have divided the country into 6 hot-spots for Flamenco, and after our summer shoot we'll be half way there! We are still writing grants and working on securing distribution (hey, you have some ideas?? send me a message NOW!), but as you all know, the world of independent documentary making is rough and mainly a labor of LOVE. Still coming ahead: California, New Mexico, and Florida!
I know you will LOVE this project too: the characters are amazingly interesting and charismatic, the performers are extremely talented, the story of the legendary JOSE GRECO is being told by one his daughters and his charming widow, who gave us a personal tour of all the costumes she has in storage from the 1950s and 1960s (YES, it is all well documented)... so much to tell, and it is all waiting for you to see and enjoy.
The production team is excellent and we are all feeling the 'duende' and 'compas' of flamenco as we move forward with the filming. The expected completion date is December 2012, and at that point we'll start the distribution process via film festivals, and theatrical release. After its run in the world of film houses, we'll release the movie for cable and public television distribution.
HELP US BRING YOU THE STORY OF THIS COMPELLING ART FORM AND OF ITS PEOPLE. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESIST THE RHYTHM, DEPTH, AND BEAUTY OF ITS EXPRESSION!!
