SAVE THE DATE!! SATURDAY, AUGUST 24TH!
At long last, my friends - the expanded, revised, grown, shaped, funnier-and-more-naked-than-ever See Me Naked makes its Seattle-area debut! And - it comes with pizza!
After an extraordinarily fun three shows at the beautiful Capitol Theatre in Yakima in March, I am pleased as punch to bring the show to You. At a place near and dear to my heart:
Open Space for Arts & Community, on beautiful Vashon Island.
I'm joining with my dear friend Karen Biondo of La Biondo Wood-fired Pizza to bring you all a scrumptiously fun and tasty reward event.
(Seriously - it's truly the best pizza I've ever had. Ever.)
You can enjoy pizza starting at 6pm & See Me Naked begins at 8pm.
If a ticket to the show is part of your reward, I'll be sending you Naked Bucks to use at the door! If the Naked Pizza Party is part of your reward, you'll get Pizza Dough (the $ kind), too!
I know the surveys went out some time ago - so if your address has changed since you filled it out, please do send me a quick message and let me know.
Open Space for Arts & Community is located at 18870 SW 103rd St, Vashon. I'll send another update in a few weeks with ferry schedules and travel tips for off-island folks.
And - please tell your friends! YOU get special treatment as honored backers, but all are welcome to purchase a ticket and enjoy the show.
I can't wait to share the new show with you. Until then, happy summer and much aloha,
My dearest backers,
You have all been in my thoughts so much lately. I apologize for the delay in physical rewards to you all - the coffee cups are at my home, awaiting shipping; the t-shirts and cards are shortly to be printed. Life. Time. I struggle with these things.
But, and - the good news? What you supported has happened! As you all know, I got to go on a writing retreat this summer, and was able to make some new material I love.
And tonight, I sit here in Yakima, ready to debut the new See Me Naked tomorrow at the lovely Capitol Theatre. I have a new Tech Director and new drummer, and they are both amazingly talented and super duper sweet (and both under 30. I like that. Makes me feel like a kid again.)
And tomorrow, a new audience in a new city will see the new / old show. One that still has the same good strong bones, and now has some nice extra curves also. A show that has matured.
I shall post again and tell you how the shows go here, and hopefully, soon, tell you about a show in Seattle or on Vashon so those of you close can see it.
For now, I thought I'd share this little story of my day.
Thank you, again, all of you.
"I had an awesome day, with so many flashbacks and memories and new energies merging and blending like a lively and beautiful river.
Terrific rehearsals at Annex this morning, on a stage I've worked on a couple of times, in a room filled with the ghost energies of I think every single Seattle theatre person I know, with Elizabeth, my dearest friend and director of over 15 years, and two lovely young men new to the show. Elizabeth and I told the story of the first ever performance of See Me Naked, opening night of the Fringe Festival in the Chamber Theatre, when Michael McQuilken was late and Dan Dennis was standing by with a metal mop bucket and a stick to play the drums in case Michael never came while I had hysterical giggles backstage (and how Michael showed up at 7:35pm, while the house manager was making her last remarks, and threw open the doors and said oh, sorry, I'm so sorry, I just gotta get my drums, couldn't find a place to park anywhere...). And the story of being on tour the summer before with Jason Webley, when the whole idea of the show was born.
And this afternoon, I drove... east on I90, same path I took in 2000 and in 2001, going out on tour to the Canadian fringe; and the beginning of the same path I traveled back and forth to Spokane to do Always, Patsy Cline, in an ancient and rattling Ford Mustang. And then the turn south to wind through that otherworldly Umtanum valley, where I went out into the desert alone for 3 days on a quest, back in my early years here in the Northwest.
I love - love - driving alone. I love going out on the road to do a show. I love this particular experience, this one that includes a nice hotel room with a big king bed with those expensive kinds of sheets (although the billets of the fringe and the camping in South Dakota on the way there wasn't terrible, I'm just a bit more partial to comfort these days). And tomorrow, we load in, and tech, and do a show. I miss my little family. I'm not sure I'd like this to be my life all the time. But today, tonight, it's a sweet treat.
And now, to watch the rest of Striptease (my homework, you know). Good night, all."
I wrote this earlier today, and posted to Facebook, then thought I should share with you all:
"So. I wrote some more.
Then I went and put the new material into the old script.
Then I came to the end, where I didn't know what to do, and I suddenly knew what to do.
And I did it.
And I cried, as I wrote the ending.
I think that is good."
And now, just a bit ago, I read over what I wrote - and it's okay. Some of it is pretty good. I won't really know, I don't think, until a few days pass, and then until I hear it out loud.
But I accomplished what I set out to do. I went back in, and re-imagined this lady's life, this lovely lady in the play. I gave her an ex-husband. A retreat to a naked hot tub place. And a whole new reason for taking her burlesque class - the new friend. Her new friend. Who may be flirting with her. But she's not sure - 'cause she hasn't flirted for a really long time.
It's all good. The doing, the getting it done. I'm listening to David Bowie now, watching the sun set through the trees.
Tomorrow I'll work a little more, and I think head for home. I miss my little family. What a wonder that is! To miss them - my days of solitude and writing have done the trick. I feel good.
Aloha to you all for now. More updates to come.
My dear See Me Naked friends,
Finally, the work has begun to make its way from my head onto the page.
Thanks to an amazing arts supporter, I am in perhaps the most beautiful spot in the world, wrapped in serenity and beauty and great music and blessed solitude.
And it's working. I've been daydreaming in stolen snatches of time, scribbling when I can. But here, with all this time and space and time, I get to write.
Your support is at work. The new See Me Naked is being born.
Here's just a small first taste of some new things.
Me and Demi
Demi Moore. We are in our 40s now, me and Demi. She’s a little bit older than me. She’s almost 50.
She started as a model, and was naked in Oui magazine – did you know that?
She married her first husband when she was 16. He was a musician – he was 12 years older than her. They were only married for a few years. Before Bruce Willis.
I remember her on General Hospital. She had a love affair with Scorpio, and I thought she was so beautiful. And she had the sexiest voice. I wanted to be her.
In 1996, Demi became the highest paid actress in Hollywood. She got $12.5 million dollars for Striptease.
Remember when she was naked on the cover of Vanity Fair? A couple of times! Once all painted with body paint. And that one time when she was pregnant. She was beautiful. She glowed. All big and pregnant and golden, and naked. Nude, some might say. A classic nude. A classic pregnant nude.
No nipples. They probably couldn’t have sold it without a brown paper wrapper cover if you’d been able to see her nipples.
There’s a guy in Florida, in Tampa, who took the right to show nipples to the Supreme Court. He has all these strip clubs, and the ladies used to have to wear pasties and thongs – then he took it to the Supreme Court, with the idea that showing nipples is like free speech! And he won. My cousin told me about him.
He’s a multi-millionaire.
And he seems like a good guy. The women, who strip in his clubs, they keep all their tips. He doesn’t take any cut at all. He just makes his money from the door. One of the women has worked for him for 26 years. She bought a house, a nice one, in a nice neighborhood after she became a stripper. Now she works in management.
Me and Demi, we’re around the same age. Not that I look like Demi. I used to, I mean not like her, but I was hot, like her. Back in the Brat Pack days. I didn’t know it then. Even in the Vanity Fair days – and then I did kinda know it, that I was beautiful. Then our paths kind of … diverged.
But even Demi’s finding it kinda hard to be Demi, it seems. Now that Ashton is gone.
I was really happy for her, when they got together.
Not Ashton. Well, he might be, I don’t know.
My friend. He’s 36.
