We play original music by Carlos Oliveira, inspired by the northeast of Brazil. We love this music and are dying to share it!

Hi all, and thanks for reading about Kata-vento and our plans to get some amazing, original music out into the world. Listen to a sample track ("Abertura").

Kata-vento means “wind catcher” in Portuguese, and features music for three flutes, guitars and percussion. Our six-piece ensemble has grown over the past year out of inspiration from our composer-leader Carlos Oliveira and a love of playing his music together.

Oliveira takes his inspiration from the music of his birthplace in northeastern Brazil. His compositions are lively, lush, rhythmic and complex with hints of jazz, samba, maracatu, choro, and sometimes even “cholypso.”

We're working on our first EP: seven songs that we're really looking forward to sharing with you!

In order to get there, we're hoping to raise the money we need to finish mastering, pressing and distributing the album. We’re writing to ask for your help finishing our EP project and bringing this unique music to more people in the Bay Area and beyond.

Check out the prizes we're getting ready for you... We hope you’ll consider being a part of our project and joining us on this amazing journey.

We can't thank you enough. Obrigada!

~ Carlos, Sonia, Rebecca, Chloe, Q and Brian

p.s. We'd like to thank Vida Studios for filming and producing our Kickstarter video.  They captured what we're all about with so much artistry and care.

Kata-vento is:
Carlos Oliveira: Compositions, Guitar and Percussion
Sonia Caltvedt: Flutes
Rebecca Kleinmann: Flutes
Chloe Scott: Flutes
Q Morrow: Guitar
Brian Rice: Percussion
