Now that most of the tracks have been laid down.....
Last week, I went up to Floyd, Virginia to Joe DeJarnette's beautiful studio in his beautiful home and recorded the bulk of Vari-Colored Songs!!!
In alliteration, it was invigorating and infuriating, exhilarating and exhausting, stressful but ultimately successful!! Working with Joe was such a perfect fit for this project! I told him on the first day, that by the end of the week, I'd definitely be ready to record all of the songs, to which he responded, "Everyone feels that way." I suppose that's all the comfort a girl needs!
I recorded mostly everything solo and live, alternating between cello, tenor banjo and guitar. I was helped out by my friends Hubby Jenkins on bones and guitar, Rhiannon Giddens on shakers and vocals and Tom Pryor on pedal steel. Rhiannon even brought her less than two week old baby to the session! She assured me that it was a pleasure to be in the studio :)
Over the next few weeks, I'll be working on liner notes for the album and working on all of the post production tasks. There's still a lot of work to be done - overdubs, mixing, mastering, art, photos, etc.- but ultimately what really matters is that we made something special and I still can't wait to share it!
Thanks for all the music suggestions for the car ride! Definitely helped my mind get into the zone for crafting beautiful songs.
Thank you for making this all possible!
Here's a few shots taken with my iPhone camera for your viewing pleasure.
Love,
Leyla

Mother to Son
By Langston Hughes
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
