The kickstarter is over but the work is just beginning!
I can not thank you all enough for contributing to the success of this fundraiser!!!
Thanks to kickstarter, all of my kickstarter backers and my friends and family, I've raised 4x's the amount I was originally asking for. Over $20,000!!!
I promise, from the bottom of my heart, that your contributions were not made in vain and I am excited for the time to come to deliver rewards. Some friends are already reaching out to organize sending off rewards parties! ....
BUT FIRST!
I gotta record this album! This weekend, I'll be making my way from New Orleans to Joe Bass' Studio 808A in Floyd, VA. Next week I'll be laying down all the tracks for this record. My immune system is doing well and my voice is back! Whew! I've bought new strings for my cello, guitar and banjo. Travel has been booked for some of my musicians and it's all coming together! It's really happening!
As I'm getting ready to make these recordings, I'm wondering if you all have any suggestions for albums that you loved, that you'd think I'd love, and/or that I should listen to for some extra inspiration on the drive.....Any thoughts?! I'm super open to genre, just wanna open my ears and listen!!
Thank you thank you thank you, I'll keep you posted on how things are going in the studio!

I really live the Neil Young album Live at Massey Hall
and I can't stop listening to the new Bruce Springsteen, Sarah Van Etten and Father John Misty album and check out the album from a bunch of people from Jefferson Airplane called Blows Against the Empire

If you don't know it already, check out the amazing sounds of a Quebecois cellist named Jorane on her second album called 16mm. I saw her perform live once and she said that spending time in Haiti was a huge influence on her...
Creator Rachel Fouché on January 9
Haiti: Ki Sa Pou-N Fe? (a Folkways recording) is a great album for the road, especially the first track "Kamarad."

Do you know the work of Ashia & the Bison Rouge? Ashia is a female cellist in Portland who combines her Polish ancestry with a little caberet style and hipster. Interesting if not inspirational. She has played with Cirque du Soleil. She funded a kickstarter project last summer apparently. My ex husband (cellist/teacher) taught her cello a time or two.
Another female cellist I've heard play is Nancy Lesh. A classical symphony cellist who turned devotional and plays Indian Dhrupad cello and I think resides in Pune India now. Her cd from 1999 seems to be the only one out and I don't see downloads.
Zoe Keeting is doing interesting things with her cello. "Into the trees" http://www.zoekeating.com/ I love her beautiful piece "Into the Trees" on her website and available for download. http://music.zoekeating.com/
I've also followed "Ethel" change from a quartet to a band, and while they have a personell change, Dorothy Lawson, cello, went to school with my ex and has great skill and energy. Instrumental so not for the vocal inspiration. Check out this piece called "Lighthouse" on album "Light". Also, "Sweet Hardwood I" shows the fun and energy. We had them come and perform this in our chamber music series.
I have been listening to Abigail Washburn lately in my art studio. Totally love vocal and your voice and cello. I no longer have a cellist in my life, but love to get a little cello from other places! So glad to find you. Your CD will be at the top of my stack for listening at my studio.
Have a great time this weekend! So excited to hear the results.

Incredible cello duet on one cello! Iva Casian Lakos and Eric Tinkerhess play a traditional Macedonian love song, Jovano, Jovanke, adapted from an arrangement by Giovanni Sollima and Monika Leskovar.
They are awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch…
Creator Barry Long on January 8
To keep you going during the ride: "Zimanukwenzeka Things Just Happen" by Big Voice Jack featuring Louis Mhlanga. A great South African penny whistle player! Also "bonfires of sao joao" by forro in the dark!
Creator Mike Wakefield on January 8
Add at least one or two Odetta tunes on your iPod, if they're not already there. And Nina Simone, too. Happy trails, and happy studio time!
Creator martha lightfoot on January 8
Anything that will inspire you to use more cello! Maybe Norman and Nancy Blake. Fiddle- cello. They are amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch…

Check out 4-string banjo player (from Martinique) - Kali. His album "Lese La Tounen" has been one of my favorites for years (It looks like there are a few sites still selling it online). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marc_Monnerville There are a few samples of his music on youtube.
Creator Chris Cohen on January 8
Check out Jayme Stone. He's a fab banjo player who stretches into Fleck style jazz and has also recorded with some great African musicians. All three albums are great and each is different from the others in the cultural musical influences on display -- http://jaymestone.com/albums
You probably know Alvin Youngblood Hart, but if not you need to get some of his stuff. I like the Down in the Alley album. He's a bluesy gruff old time banjo player and singer. http://www.mojomusic.com/alvin/
Give Kelly McFarling - Distractible Child a listen, too. Folksy rock, she plays banjo and is a great singer with solid story telling songs. A San Francisco girl. http://www.kellymcfarling.com/

Hi Leyla, my suggestion for your drive would be this record by North Carolina artist The Tender Fruit:

It's beautiful.
Best of luck with everything!

Congratulations! I look forward to hearing the album when it's complete. For driving music I would recommend Over the Rhine's album Drunkard's Prayer and Greg Brown's album In the Dark With You.
Safe travels!

For cadence and beauty:
Melos - by Vasilis Tsabropoulos and Anja Lechner
Le pas du chat noir - by Anour Brahem
For a different composition:
No Compassion - by Talking Heads
For vocal diversity:
Musst Musst - by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Knock Loud or Red Bells - by Neko Case
For the hell of it (I'm in an Iggy mood today):
I wanna be your dog - by The Stooges
Risky, on NEO GEO - by Ryuchi Sakamoto
But most of all.... I really hope you have a good time putting your album together!
Creator Eoin Donnellon on January 8
Given it's for inspiration and not direct sources of styles, tunes & songs I'd recommend The Storm by Moving hearts. As an Album it's atriumph varying from the most lyrical solo flute in "May Morning Dew" to manic ensemble interweaving in "The Storm" It's not for the style I suggest it but the way the music leads the structure of the album. Another one for the use of vocals would be Uam by Julie Fowlis. The voice using words rather than just sounds to make the rythm of each piece is really well done. All very Celtic stuff, but it's what's going on in there that I'm highlighting. The style and spirit of your Haitian poetry and music will be their own.
I Don't know if you can get the BBC web player stuff there but Andy Kershaw did a couple of programmes which I loved http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005xm30

That's great news, Leyla! I am looking forward to hearing more of your music. I sent you a message, previously, offering you one of my BuskerBags for one of your instruments. The project was on Kickstarter, but didn't make it. You can do a search for that name for additional info. If you would email me at "tim@cygnetpress.com" with an address I can send the bag to, I would be be honored.
Thank you,
Tim

I have been listening to Meshell Ngdeocello's latest over and over again. She has a lot of collaboration on this and it may help you think about how to incorporate the other musicians
Creator Adam D. Morris on January 8
Check out the album "Haunted" by an artist called Poe. It's one of my favourite albums, and acts as both a tribute to her dead father (documentary filmmaker Tad Danielewski, with his voice included via old tapes she incorporated) and an homage to the book "House of Leaves" (written by her brother Mark Danielewski). A masterpiece on all levels.

If you're in the mood for some old gospel, try Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers! Anything from their Complete Specialty Recordings is great.
Creator Sharon Kilfoy on January 8
Maybe you'd be inspired listening to Lhasa de Selva. I especially like her middle album - the one in Spanish. French and English. Maybe some interludes in Creole in yours would be nice, too. I love hearing other languages sung - it is a great way to try to learn them.
Creator Brett Nieland on January 8
If you are coming through Lexington, I will buy you lunch! I want to hear more about your trip to Haiti.
