A stirring and poetic new play about friendship, forgiveness and the power of music to connect us - premiering in New York this August
CANON IN D MINOR is a stirring and poetic new play with music by Toronto playwright/actor Jessica Liadsky and directed by Rachel Slaven.
After her best friend takes her own life in their final year of high school, Beth struggles to forgive herself for what she might have done to prevent it. Music is woven in to the storytelling of this tender exploration of friendship, forgiveness, and the power of music to connect us.
We believe passionately in this play and are thrilled that it has been selected to participate in the 2012 New York International Fringe Festival this August 10-26! Of over 800 projects submitted, it was one of 200 chosen!
“The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC) is the largest multi-arts festival in North America, with more than 200 companies from all over the world performing for 16 days in more than 20 stages across several neighborhoods in downtown Manhattan, notably the Lower East Side, the East Village, and Greenwich Village.” - www.fringenyc.org
CANON IN D MINOR is being produced by Emily Hammond and presented at La MaMa’s First Floor Theatre in the East Village.
Featuring: Suzy Jane Hunt (Stratford Shakespeare Festival's Twelfth Night), Eryn Murman (Broadway's Spring Awakening) and Brittany Parker (St. Ann's Warehouse's Stop the Virgens), as well as two violinists.
CANON IN D MINOR was first developed at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where Jessica Liadsky and Rachel Slaven met as theatre students. The Canadian premiere was presented in Toronto’s prestigious juried SummerWorks Theatre Festival. Audiences and critics alike praised the production; NOW Magazine Toronto deemed it one of the festival’s Outstanding New Plays and Outstanding Productions, and CBC Radio named it among the Top 5 in the Festival.
“…Jessica Liadsky's script, which relies on music and musical imagery, never opts for sentimentality. Instead, there's a rich and multi-sided look at the friendship, with director Rachel Slaven getting immaculate performances from a cast who all play Beth and the other characters.” - Jon Kaplan, NOW Magazine Toronto
