Amazing news! We're giving away a copy of 'Forever' signed by Judy Blume!

Update #25 · May 3, 2012 · comment

Above L: Therese is having a hard time letting go of the book! R: Judy Blume's inscription.

In case you missed our mass email:

The legendary Judy Blume has just donated a signed copy of her classic novel 'Forever' to our Kickstarter campaign! I was so tempted to keep it for myself, but instead, I'm giving it away as a very special thank you.

We're going to draw one lucky winner from all our backers who pledge $100 or more. Make your pledge or increase your existing pledge by Friday at 6pm (NYC time) to qualify. You can still pick a reward-the draw is a bonus. We'll post video of us drawing the lucky person's name to our Kickstarter page on Friday night!

Judy Blume wrote 'Forever' in 1975 because her daughter asked for a story about a teenage girl who loses her virginity and doesn't die–and it quickly became one of the most banned books in America! Judy has been an anti-censorship activist ever since.  I grew up with Judy Blume and I remember spending Grade 6 passing around her books from girl to girl. And now this signed copy of 'Forever' could be yours for your pledge of $100 or higher.

In the spirit of Junior High, tell your two best friends to pledge along with you. You can take turns reading the book out loud to each other at your next slumber party.

We have only 6 more days to meet our $35,000 goal, and we need your help to raise the remaining $6601 by May 9th.

If you've been thinking of pledging, now is the time to get in on this amazing draw! If $100 is too steep for you right now, we'd be grateful for whatever you can spare, or for you to spread the word amongst your friends.

Thank you for your spectacular support!

We're going to be on Israeli TV!!!

Update #24 · Apr 25, 2012 · comment

This is soooo exciting!

"How to Lose Your Virginity" is going to be on Israeli TV*, on the NOGA network! Here's how the website describes the channel:

The Channel brings the audience a varied and rich selection of fine documentaries and informational content from local producers and from distributors worldwide. It offers diverse high quality programming and strives to voice the unconventional perspectives, the misrepresented groups and complex subject matters.

Doesn't that sound perfect for this film? This is exciting but also scary because it means we REALLY need to get this film funded so we can get it done!

If you've been trying to decide whether to pledge to this campaign or not, please believe that we really, really need your support right now.

We have all new rewards at every level, including a custom-designed cherry pendant, one-on-one consultations with Fernanda Rossi or Jude Ray, or a fabulous goody bag with unmentionables from Good Vibrations.

Thanks to you for getting "How to Lose Your Virignity" this far! We're $16,468 away from our goal and we need you on our team to help this film go all the way.

*Now Therese can embarrass her family on both sides of the Atlantic!

The Huffington Post says our Virginity doc is "smart, funny and provoking!" But we're running out of time.

Update #23 · Apr 23, 2012 · comment

"Virginity is a powerful and malleable concept, as evidenced by the teenagers in Therese Shechter's smart, funny and provoking documentary...You really should help her finish making her movie so more people can have better sex" The Huffington Post

Hello wonderful supporters!

Sorry to barrage you with these, but we can't stop until May 9th. That's the deadline to hit our $35K goal. If we don't, we'll get nothing, losing the 14.7K we've already raised with your help. Back us and watch the trailer here.

This project is not only important to me personally, but to the dozens who've worked on it, the hundreds who've shared their stories with us, and the many thousands who are waiting for this film to come out all over the world.

Our donations have ranged from $10 to $2000 and very many of them have been from strangers. Now we need our friends.

Back us or increase your pledge today - we're running out of time!

Please help us make crowd-funding work, support independent media, and share this with your friends! Thanks so much for your support.

Why it's vital to be part of our new Kickstarter campaign!

Update #22 · Apr 18, 2012 · comment

We've just crossed the $10,000 mark, in 1/3 of the time and with 1/2 the number of backers of our last Kickstarter. This is thrilling!

Thank you so much to many of you wonderful original backers who re-pledged and got us this far this fast!! We still must raise more money to meet our goal. Please share the campaign with everyone you can and encourage them to be as amazing as you.

If we don't get to $35,000 by May 9th we get absolutely nothing.

And if you haven't made a pledge this time, we're asking again if you'd consider matching your earlier donation. Here are some important reasons why:

We want to be done in time for the Sundance submission deadline this fall. Everything is in place, but we need this successful fundraiser to cover all the many expenses we still have, especially being able to hire our talented editor, composer and animator to do their magic.

The war on women is raging around us. The time is now to push back against the damaging messages in our culture about women and what they're 'allowed' to do with their bodies. We all heard Rush Limbaugh call a young woman a slut simply because she wants affordable birth control. This is our virginity culture at work and it's outrageous.

Independent media needs your support. It's up to us to tell our own stories outside of the corporate media machine. The government isn't helping and the grantmakers are broke. There is little if any funding for non-exploitative stories about the lives of young women, especially films like "How to Lose Your Virginity" which encourage young people to challenge the damaging messages in the pop culture landscape.

We raised over $12,000 last time thanks to you. Please help achieve our goals again today.

Fan feedback from our sneak preview at MomentumCon, Dr Joycelyn Elders and talkin' Virginity with Charlie Glickman

Update #21 · Apr 10, 2012 · comment

It's two weeks into our new Kickstarter and there are exciting things happening!

Last week I was honored to preview a portion of How to Lose Your Virginity in DC at Momentum, which is a gathering of the very top people in feminism and sexuality. Needless to say, I was thrilled and a bit terrified, and the response was amazing.

Here's what one young woman had to say:

"I attended the Momentum Conference this past weekend, and saw the screening of the How To Lose Your Virginity preview, and I just really want to say that you're awesome. As someone who has dealt first-hand with the virginity movement and its damaging effects, I was fascinated and so, so thankful that there are people fighting against this awfulness. From what I saw, the film really hit home in so many ways."

One of the stars of our film, Hanne Blank, was there doing Q&A with me. I unleashed my inner fangirl chatting with former Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who is also in the film. (She was on fire at the conference!)

While I was at the conference I got to interview some fantastic folks about virginity. One of my favorite presentations was by Good Vibrations' Education Program Manager Charlie Glickman. Listen to him talk about all the ways he defines losing virginity (audio may not be suitable for work).
