Discover the truth behind the myth of Atlantis in a beautiful steampunk adventure.

All Aboard the Steampunk Express!
Yes, that’s right, here at Ironsun we love all things Steampunk and we feel that this most elegant and arresting of visual styles has been underused in the game industry, something we hope to set to rights with our latest game.
We bring to your attention Fathom, a 2.5D action adventure game that combines puzzle solving with combat and exploration in a beautiful Steampunk themed adventure. Journey through ancient ruins and beautiful caverns as you delve deeper into the dark waters of the Caribbean Sea, battling long-submerged foes with fiendish intent!
To master the Bathysphere and wield the ultimate powers of Atlantis you need a sharp mind, a happy trigger finger and a hunger to explore. Repair the Atlanteans broken machines, solve their ancient puzzles and be rewarded with their hidden relics of destruction to wreak havoc on their mechanical defences. Wandering blindly into a fire fight could be the end of you; exploration will yield secret pathways, a clever way to dispatch of the threat or the means to reduce them to scrap metal!
Fathom has a strong focus on puzzle solving, from pick up and drop offs to brain teasing riddles. The idea is that you get to enjoy drifting through a beautiful environment, solving puzzles ranging from child’s-play to hair pullers.
You play as Nathaniel Lockhart, a Victorian adventurer, who is shipwrecked in the Caribbean Sea during the late 1870’s. Your memories of events surrounding the shipwreck are hazy, but since your rescue violent dreams of a mysterious craft attacking the Cruise Liner dominate your every thought. In the midst of his nightmares, Nathaniel sees designs for a craft unlike any built by man before. Now obsessed with the idea that this is the only way he can find answers, he pools all his resources to build the machine from his visions, and mounts an expedition back to the murky waters that haunt his every thought.
We at Ironsun Studios are primarily based in England but with people in Russia and Romania too, all committed to the cause of a special genre; the Undersea Neo-Gothic Steampunk Adventure.
We’ve had many compliments on the music; so here’s a snippet from one of the Ambient tracks.
The idea of Fathom came to us back in 2010, as we were thinking about our next game after Ionball. We had the idea of making a game based on Luna Lander (old school!) and the conversation generally merged into the concept for Fathom. The original idea was to have a 2d game only, but as we took on Unity3D we decided to up it to 2.5D.
Fathom has passed the prototype stage, and we have now got the ball rolling. We have completed the first true in-game level as shown in the video. We’re hoping that those of you who know Unity will be able to appreciate that for the resources we have Fathom really is a stunning looking game. And find it a testament to what you can do with bone-grinding commitment, a small group and Unity at your fingertips. All of us on the team have put many long nights and early mornings into the game, because to us it’s a labour of love.
We are a really small team, and desperately want to publish Fathom ourselves. It’s taken us until now to produce the first building blocks of a game which we are rightly proud of, but we really want to finish it. Except finishing it isn’t quite enough for us, if it means not being able to stay independent. So this is where you come in. With the help of the Kickstarter community, we hope to get enough funds to make Fathom great, and make it as Ironsun Studios.
It’s also a very easy game to add to which also works well with Kickstarter, there’s no limits to puzzle ideas, enemy looks, weapon ideas it’s all down to funding so the more we get the more we can make.
It will also be great to get feedback from the community and take on advice to help mould Fathom into something great.
Hitting our £120K milestone will make Fathom reach its full potential, we will be able to use all the features we wish to make this game unique and maybe more, surpassing the required funding will only help to expand what we already hope to achieve.
Currently, the main focus for the game to be released on Windows 7/8. As the game is currently still in development, it is too early to specify hardware requirements, but it will definitely require a dedicated Directx 9 capable video card. Our target is to support a variety of hardware, but we will announce the full system requirements at a later date. The intended ESRB/PEGI rating should be E/7.
Backers will be rewarded with goods ranging from digital gifts such as an exclusive in-game relic and even your face integrated into the game by our artists as an ancient head stone, to limited edition T-shirts and hoodies designed by the Fathom creators and perfected by our artists for a truly unique steam punk look.
If, with the kind help of the Kickstarter community, we reach our goal we intend to include additional features to the game depending on the amount we go above it. There’s loads of ideas in our collective heads for Fathom, but we decided the following would be great to have if we had time and money.
We are just completing our second level (which is the first level in the game just to confuse everyone ;-) ) and starting work on the third level. Also, the story elements of the game are starting to take shape and we will be able to show more of both the story and the first level soon. We’re really excited about how it looks and can’t wait to share! Until then, here's a sneak preview of some of the new stuff coming!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
One of the biggest challenges after we are funded is recruiting the extra resource that has the talent and skills to not just complete the work in the timescales required but also improve the game as well. We have a very talented team, but we will need to add to it to complete the game to the standard and timescales that we want to.
One of the other risks is on the technical side - keeping the performance of the game within the constraints of the hardware base we are aiming at. If we do have enough funding to port the game to other platforms than PC, then we will have technical challenges in making Fathom work on less powerful platforms, such as Ipad and other tablets.
Fathom is built using Unity, so support for both Mac and Linux is out of the box, but there are caveats with Linux, which are documented here http://blogs.unity3d.com/2012/11/22/linux-publishing-in-unity-4-0/ So both are definitely in our plans, as Unity (the engine for Fathom) supports them; it’s one of our Stretch Goals. We can’t promise for them to be ported straight away though – our focus for Kickstarter is Windows 7/8.
We will support other language versions, including those names, but this will be in sub-title form only – the voice acting will have to stay in English only – sorry!
Yes, it will definitely be released on Windows 7, via a Digital Download service yet to be confirmed. It will also be available on Windows 8.
This has yet to be confirmed, but we expect an E (ESRB) or 7 (PEGI).
·The gameplay we have shown is effectively from the trainer level, so is easier than later levels and has a fair amount of “hand holding”. So expect the game to get much more challenging as you go along!
