Upcoming Happenings!

Update #7 · Nov 11, 2012 · comment

We're excited to say that the books are en route and should be in Portland tomorrow so we can commence with getting them out to all of you this week!

There are some other things happening in the coming weeks as well that we want to share.

Tomorrow morning, we'll be featured on KPTV, the Portland Fox affiliate. We'll be discussing the book along with an event we're participating in later in the week.

This coming Friday, November 16th - you'll find us at Portland's first Japanese Pub Food event - Celebrate Izakaya!  The event takes place at the Jupiter Hotel and in addition to the exclusive book launch of The Tall Trees of Tokyo, the evening will spotlight the best of Japanese cuisine, shochu, saké and beer - along with a live art installation and Japanese pop culture.  It's going to be a great evening and if you're in Portland, we hope to see you there.

Then, on December 6th, there will be a book launch at Portland's Hellion Gallery in conjunction with First Thursday.  Stop by and say hello. The gallery is always abuzz on the first Thursday of the month and in addition to the book launch, there's a great show.  Matt Wagner's interest in international art migrates to the southern hemisphere and there will be works by 15 emerging Brazilian artists in the gallery for the month of December.

We owe all of this to you, our backers!  Help us celebrate.

Well, it’s been a wild ride but we did it! We can’t thank you enough for all the support you’ve shown us over the last thirty days.  We wanted to use Kickstarter to announce to the world that this book was on its way and all of you who supported this project in any way helped us amplify that message. You have ensured that more people, from all over the world, will be able to see the work of these fine artists.

Your support means that we have now officially launched our independent press.  And you’ve helped Hellion Gallery publish its first book. This 30 day push that involved over 90 supporters. And many of you will have a beautiful book and unique artwork to show for your effort.

To everyone who Liked, Shared, Forwarded, Tweeted, Re-Tweeted, Mentioned, and Posted about our project on social media, texted or mentioned the project to your friends - we are grateful for your effort.

To our backers, we owe our deepest thanks.  Your support has made our efforts for of the last two years a reality and we are humbled by all of the encouragement we’ve received from our family, friends, and complete strangers who found this book and wanted to see it happen. We are particularly excited by the fact that we had backers from seven different countries. We wanted to make an international book and you confirmed that we had.

The end of the Kickstarter means the next phase of our work has truly begun. We will be taking  pre-orders through our website at Overcupbooks.com, so if you know anyone who wants a copy, direct them our way. We are only printing 1000 copies of this book and when they are gone, they are gone.

We’ll keep all of our backers updated through this website. We’ll be sending the book to the printer in the next couple of weeks and they’ve told us that it will take 10-12 weeks to turn it around. We’ll have it back by the end of the summer and start shipping out all of the rewards as soon as we can.

Stay tuned - we'll have more updates in coming weeks and will be sharing more details of the book with our backers.

Thank you!

Patrick McDonald - Overcup Press

Trains, Naoshi, and Oyama Enrico Isamu Letter

Update #3 · May 13, 2012 · comment
When we began working on the concept for this book, one of the things the author, Matt Wagner, wanted to incorporate was some information about the neighborhoods where each artist works and lives - and how they navigate Tokyo.

From the beginning, we incorporated the theme of the Tokyo train system.  The colorful style, sense of motion, and connectivity of the subway map are seen through the design elements of the book.

Each artist answered questions about their neighborhood and what it's like to live there.  They also give recommendations for their favorite local restaurants and bars and share some tips on what to do if you miss the last train in Tokyo!  We wouldn't call it a travel book, but there is more within the pages than just great art.

Speaking of great art: here are a few more images from the book by Naoshi and Oyama Enrico Isamu Letter.

                                                                                                              Naoshi

                                                                                 Oyama Enrico Isamu Letter

As we head into this last week, if there is someone who you think would be interested in this project, now is the time to let them know.  And please take a minute to share our project on Facebook and Twitter.

Special thanks to all those who have gotten us this far!
