The Ethno-Urban Orchestra is a unique contemporary orchestra opportunity for students from across country.
The Ethno-Urban Orchestra is a unique contemporary orchestra opportunity enabling students from across the country to collaborate with professional musicians from a variety of backgrounds. During this project, students learn contemporary music and perform along side the Boston String Quartet with special guest, Orla Fallon, from Celtic Women.
Our concerts have a unique way of fostering a relationship between the public, students, teachers, and professional musicians. Our goal is to charge a musical community and inspire a city/region to invest in its arts education programs.
The orchestra experience is designed to show students the myriad possibilities that exist for classical music performers. Students will be introduced to methods for improvising in jazz, rock, and world music and will perform in a plethora of different musical styles. For the concert, the students and the professional musicians share the stage together.
Each piece on the program has been specially arranged or composed and is a unique fusion of world music, jazz, rock, pop, and classical music. The first half of the program ends with Voyage to Hyrule, an arrangement done by Todd Sullivan of the midi sounds found the video game The Legand of Zelda. It retells the story line from the game with musical forms and musical quotes from repertoire found in Western classical music. Its composition enables students and audiences members to identify with more traditional forms of writing and musical meaning. In addition to serious symphonic material, the concert also includes celtic music from Orla Fallon's repertoire, and entertaining works, such as; Beat It and Oye Como Va, all retold on acoustic instruments over a track of a rock band.
Money raised will go towards, hall and equipment rental, CD & DVD production, and travel expenses.
