You the public, reporting from the biggest videogames show on earth, on Youtube, as it happens!

**Updates**

  • People asked why public reporting is better - I added a "Why?" section below.
  • People asked why our goal was £30,000. I've added a "So why £30,000?" section below.
  • Also, see the Updates tab for project news, =).
  • Follow our Facebook Page! http://www.facebook.com/E3Videos
  • REMEMBER! Money is only taken if the total/goal is raised! So don't be shy in pledging/donating! =)

The BIG Idea:

Let's take gamers to E3 - the largest videogames trade show in the world!
Let's get them playing the newest consoles and games;
Let's have them share their experience to camera, with brutal honesty;
and let's get it all on Youtube for everyone to enjoy within 24 hours!

This is endurance publishing (meeting the challenge to publish during the actual event), with public involvement.
Real people. Real Reporting. About what *you* really care about.

And it's *REALLY* possible.

I produced the most comprehensive video coverage of E3 2006. Over 100 games covered, over two hours of footage! And yes - I took real gamers - members of the public - people just like you - to E3!

How we'll do it in 2013:

Such epic coverage cannot be turned around within 24 hours without many hands making light work of it!

So that's the plan! I know the work that's involved. I've split it up into a number of jobs, and figured out how much it'll cost to get professionals performing each role.

We're anticipating covering circa 150 games - 50 playtests, 100 round-ups, across 16 platforms - Next Xbox, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, PSP, Nintendo DS, Ouya, Nvidia Shield, Steam Box, iOS, Android - but do get in touch and let us know what you want to see covered!

We'll work with cameramen, editors, runners, loggers, uploaders, search engine optimisers, researchers, script writers, voiceovers, and more. Exert blood, sweat, and tears, to turn it all around during the three days of the actual show itself! [Individual playtests online within 24 hours of being filmed, complete show coverage wrapped up by the end of the event week.]

Videos will go up on Youtube, and we'll also have our own site www.e3videos.com so you can keep track of all the content we're uploading!

Why?

- Gamers are passionate fans! Fans are experts at the genres and franchises they follow! We'll match gamers to the types of games they're experts on - and if you're a fan too, you'll know where they're coming from when they report! If not, you'll benefit from hearing their expertise in plain english, and witnessing their enthusiasm come across on camera!

- Public reporters are straight-talking and refreshingly down-to-earth. Professional journalists report from E3 each year. I think it's important to give the public a voice too.

- Media should be interactive! Let us do something you can be involved in, in some way!

- Comprehensive coverage! At E3 2006, we still covered the ageing Gameboy Advance for example! If you care about a niche that's often overlooked - we'll look out for it for you!

- Your support could start something really great! If this campaign succeeds, we may do even more videogame media projects that involve the public!

- This is a chance to push what's possible with new cloud collaboration video tools! If we can come together, and for one week produce best of class coverage of a major gaming event, it'll be something we can all be proud of saying we were a part of.

New Technology!

We're looking at using cloud technology to make this all possible! Aframe.com - that allows teams to work together on video productions through the internet, have offered their support for the project. We've also been talking to the likes of AOL's StudioNow, ForScene, and Dock10, who also all have video-related cloud platforms.

We *NEED* YOU!

By all means donate, but we want your input and expertise just as much as your funding! Let us know what YOU are looking forwards to most at E3 2013! What YOU want to find out about! What sort of coverage YOU would like to see!

Are you just as excited by the Nvidia Shield, Ouya, and Steam Box as you are the Next Xbox, PlayStation 4, or Wii U? If we have limited resources, where should we concentrate our efforts?

Can you help our budget go further by getting involved and helping out?

Can you tell your friends about what we're trying to accomplish? You could make all the difference in helping us reach our goal, by helping get the word out about our kickstarter campaign! Real gamers, at E3! And honest opinions, cutting through next-gen hype, up on Youtube for all to enjoy!

Contribute Reward ideas! We'll be adding new rewards to this page as the campaign goes on. Your idea could be up on the page within a matter of days - so get in touch, =).

Humility:

The goal has been set to cover post production costs.
I don't need funding to go to E3 myself.

The E3 2006 production's credit roll pays tribute to over 90 people! I couldn't have done it without them. Likewise, E3 2013 coverage will be a far bigger effort than just myself.

I'm not perfect. Past E3 video productions I've done could still be improved upon in many ways. Your feedback can help ensure we address weak points, and deliver our best coverage ever.

So why £30,000?

So first, you define the scope of the project.
In the past, we've done playtests...like this:

...and round ups, like this:

So this shows how many playtests and round ups we could do for each format:

I've tried to keep things simple, by cutting down coverage on Wii, DS, and PSP to just five games, and only doing one playtest feature looking at the likes of Ouya or Nvidia's Shield overall. So although it says games, in their case it would likely be a hardware review of sorts.

Then we want it all online within 24 hours right? So this is what costs.
Editing a playtest involves multiple stages. Typically, transcribing what a person says, editing that text into an order that makes sense, then cutting the footage to match the text, then covering up the cuts with footage of the game. This is a whole day's work.

Our previous spreadsheet shows that we want 42 of these, and we know E3 goes on for 3 days, so we could split 42 into 14 a day, over 3 days. That would require 14 playtest editors, editing 1 playtest each day.

So next we move onto the staff and time costs.
Editors and cameramen typically cost £250-350 a day.
Everyone else I've bumped down to minimum wage at about £50 a day.
Although E3 lasts three days, some staff are down for five days due to press conferences that need covering:

....and we're left with the grand total of £37360... >_<...gosh! That's steep! But we can cut corners, right? Try and get a few people to help for free, maybe not cover as many games or formats, etc...so yeah, I figured we could still do *something* for as little as £30,000. Bearing in mind KickStarter fees themselves take around 10% of that, and you soon realise a £30k goal only leaves us with £27,000 to play with. Over £10,000 less than anticipated, =P. And notice the complete lack of travel, food, accommodation costs, etc. That would have come out of my own pocket.

This was the thinking behind the £30,000 goal - it's a lot, but far less than I expected the whole project to actually cost.

If the idea attracts
voluntary editors, there may be scope to have another kickstarter with a far lower goal...but this project takes a LOT of work, so working for free on this would be a lot to ask of anyone.

Finally...

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

My experience has been in editing for standard definition DVD.
Producing for Youtube in HD requires a different workflow.

We'll be bringing in experts to get the workflow right,
but who we collaborate with remains a risk in itself also.

We'll need to source a workspace in Los Angeles, with reliable internet.

My previous E3 DVD project suffered large delays in post production.
I hope to avoid such problems this time around, by using multiple editors.

Nonetheless, 24-hour turnaround on playtests will be a huge under-taking, and the workload must become as streamlined as possible.

We're hoping to use Aframe.com's new proxy-editing solutions. This is bleeding edge stuff still being developed, and there's always the risk that the technology will not be fully operational in time for E3, and we may have to use a different workflow.

We've added a mini souvenir magazine as one of the project rewards. Our priority will be on producing videos, and a souvenir magazine might subsequently suffer delays. If so, we will keep backers informed.

There's not a lot of time between now and E3, yet lots to organise. It's gonna be a challenge!

We are 100% independent from the E3 Expo and its organisers, and they have the final say in who can and who can't attend E3. We are confident we can do this, but we cannot promise entry to E3 to anyone ourselves. We can only promise we'll do our best, to get our public reporters in.

If a major obstacle occurs seriously jeopardising our ability to deliver, we will write to all backers with possible options going forwards. Options may include delays/deferrals, or refunds.
