This book to help promote acceptance of indivduals with Autism. The funds will finish the payments for the illustrations.
My name is Gretchen Leary, I'm 26, and I have mild Asperger's Syndrome. I am the published author of two books of poetry (under my maiden name Gretchen Gundel)
I decided to write a children's book promoting Autism acceptance when I realized that with bullying being such an incredible problem right now- in order to end discrimation, we have to start with the basics. Teaching children at an early age about how each child is different and that that is what makes the world so special is the first step in my opinion.
When I finished the short manuscript, I sought out an illustrator with the same passion to make a difference. I found an illustrator who is also on the Autism Spectrum that wants to make this book happen as well.
While the actual storyline does not use the word "Autism" in it specifically, it mentions many of the specific sensory integration difficulties that most of us on the Autism Spectrum have. I wanted to leave it broad enough, however, so that ths book could be used to promote differences of all kinds and all disabilities.
The goal is to use an interactive story-line to engage children to better gain an understanding of how a child on the Autism Spectrum or with a disability might feel; instead of being so quick to judge due to lack of understanding.
I am hoping that the production of this book is what will help me become a true Advocate for Autism Awareness and to end bullying. My goal is to have this book in individuals home's and schools as well.
The manuscript was finished a couple months ago. I have only a couple hundred left to pay the illustrator and then I am going to be actively seeking an agent who will help me see this project through to completion.
I want to give credit for the image used for this project as well. It was not drawn by the illustrator and will not be used in the book itself. I am not able to post any of the illustrations until after I have finished paying for them.

This pledge would exceed my goal for the illustrations but all additional funds would go towards the promotion of this book to find a publisher or towards self publishing should I not find a publisher by the Fall of 2012. The reward would be five signed copies of the book, a line on the dedication page once the book is published, and a personal thank-you letter.Estimated delivery:
