WHAT'S THIS PROJECT ALL ABOUT?
This is a series of forty images of dogs looking out of car windows - sounds a bit strange but the pictures have been seen in magazines and galleries all over the world as well as on the BBC and in Time.com. I'm a professional photographer in London and now need funding to turn this two-year project into a beautiful fine-art book. Any help you give would be INCREDIBLE (and fulfill a life-long dream to see my work published) and in return you can get stunning gallery prints and a copy of the first edition book with your name printed in the back. See the links on the right for more information.
Dogs in cars - why on earth??
When I first had the idea five years ago I thought it was foolish. Dogs in cars? errrr..
But the best ideas are the ones
that stay with you and after many years of being lodged in my subconscious this one eventually had to come out barking.
I now realize the pictures come from fairly deep fears I've had of being alone and without a voice (I found it almost impossible to express myself when I was a kid) and also from my early fascination with animals, dogs in particular, who also seemed vulnerable and somehow mute.
I’ve suffered from depression on and and off for much of my life – and I'll place a fair bet that these fears are at the heart of my struggles. But strangely enough I found peering into those cars and seeing the dogs inside somewhat beautiful - as if I was looking into the darkest places inside myself and seeing a face there. A silent face. But one that I recognized.
Some people find this project funny, and I have no problem with that. But I hope it is also poignant and ultimately hopeful. If you have experienced the anxiety and darkness that comes from feeling alone and can connect with these images then please pass on the word.
Kickstarter is all or nothing. I HAVE to raise my goal or no money gets transferred, zero. It would be wonderful to see this project reach its final resting place as a book. I would be grateful to each and everyone one of you that helps.
How did you make these images?
These images are shot on location and the dog is placed in the car. That's important to say. A lot of people think these are incidental images. This isn't the case... partly because its very hard to find dogs stuck in cars whilst you are carrying lights around and partly because these images are not meant to be documentary, but something more dreamlike and cinematic. They evoke a feeling. Lots of lights are used and the mood is carefully controlled.
Why dogs and not people in the car?
Dogs are emotionally honest. They don't hide who they are. The dog in the car is a metaphor for those raw and dare I say it - animal - parts of ourselves that we keep locked away. But the images also say something about the way we control the animals in our lives.
Why do you need all that money?
An amazing German fine-art publisher called Kehrer wants to produce a limited-edition book - but only if funds can be raised to contribute to the cost. This is standard practice in the art photography world (especially in these hard times). Since the book will be of an extremely high quality (rich photo paper, linen cover we hope) and limited to around 1000 copies at a relatively large-format (up to 14 inches wide) and also printed on a special European press the costs are considerable.
But it means the book will be BEAUTIFUL!!! Woof!
Every cent of your donations will contribute directly to the book. The more that is funded, the bigger and more lavish the book will be (without any extra costs to you). And the publisher expects the final book to cost more than it does on kickstarter - so getting pledging! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This sort of personal heart-felt support for artistic projects is what makes things happen.
Available in two edition sizes, 36x24inch and the ultimate gallery print: 60x40inch. Each image in each size limited to 10 prints (+ 2 artists proofs) worldwide
