TwoSense: Ashley Bathgate, cello Lisa Moore, piano
Newsflash: We have reached our initial financial goal, but we would LOVE TO GO BEYOND our goal, and raise more money for commissions and recordings and concerts so please don't be shy!
And, of course, may we say a huge thank you to those who have pledged so far! THANK YOU!!!
Hello friends and music lovers!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by our page. We are excited to introduce you to the cello and piano duo, TwoSense, and to our commissioning project.
This project is about giving today's composers a voice as well as adding to the chamber music repertoire. In order to do this we've decided to commission composers who will make a valuable and lasting contribution.
After a smashing NYC debut at (le) Poisson Rouge this past January -- on which we premiered two works written expressly for us (you can read the New York Times review here) -- TwoSense is moving full-steam ahead, with concerts scheduled throughout the United States and abroad.
As part of our next step we need your help to commission three outstanding composers* whose music we feel the world must hear! Each possesses not only an extraordinary command of their craft but also a rare and unique voice, and we are sure you will be as thrilled as we are with their work. When these compositions are finished they will be premiered on our concerts during the upcoming season, toured, recorded, promoted and entered into the ever-expanding repertoire.
If our goal of $6500 is met, each of these composers will receive the commissioning fee they deserve for their hard work and YOU will have made it happen.
Thank you,
Ashley & Lisa
*WHO we chose & WHY we chose them:
Samuel Carl Adams- http://www.samuelcarladams.com/
Sam is writing a Piano Trio for TwoSense and violinist Karen Bentley Pollick.
Sam is a dynamic composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music whose works equally embrace tradition and the non-vernacular. His music draws primarily from experimental structures, microsound, noise, jazz, programming, and phonography. He has been commissioned by The Paul Dresher Electroacoustic Ensemble, ACJW (The Academy-Carnegie, Juilliard, Weill), MATA (Music at the Anthology), Simon Carrington and the Norfolk Music Festival, and The Living Earth Show. Sam is currently in the process of developing a work for the New World Symphony utilizing their new and dynamic performance space in Miami, Florida. The piece will have it's premiere under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas in the spring of 2012.
Daniel Felsenfeld- http://www.danielfelsenfeld.com/
Daniel F. is writing TwoSense a piece for cello and piano based on the book Nudities by Giorgio Agamben.
The music of Daniel Felsenfeld is work that, while deeply rooted in the Great Western Musical Tradition, has a newness and freshness, aware of current trends but never caving to them. It is work that is unafraid to be virtuosic, and just plain accessibly rolicking. His projects are rangy: currently, aside from his piece for TwoSense, he is in the midst of both re-setting every word of David Bowie's seminal record The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars to his own music (for Transit, with Corey Dargel and Melissa Hughes), as well as writing an opera for Opera on Tap based on T.C Boyle's novel The Inner Circle (about Dr. Alfred Kinsey) and a song cycle based on texts written for him by authors like Rick Moody, Amanda Palmer, Lydia Lunch, Roseanne Cashe, Jonathan Lethem and Fiona Maazel.
Daniel Wohl- http://www.danielwohlmusic.com/
Daniel W. is writing TwoSense a piece for cello, piano, and live electronics.
Daniel is a French-American composer who writes for a variety of instruments that range from computers and slide whistles to orchestras, chamber ensembles and string quartets. Recently reviewed by the New York Times as one of his generation's "imaginative and skillful creators" and a composer whose music runs "deeper than the cleverness at it's surface"(Steve Smith, NY Times), his recent work draws on his background in electronic music and delves into sounds produced by decayed audio, flaws in recorded media and white noise. Daniel is also actively involved in writing for film, and his scores have been heard at festivals internationally (Brooklyn International Film Festival, Chelsea Rooftop Film Festival, ISFF Melbourne).
