About this project
Weaving is a simple and rewarding act. It is also a politically charged act, for when regain the ability to make essentials for ourselves we produce a new economy, one where we can make the rules. For the past five years I have been leading weaving groups and inspiring weaving actions throughout the world using simple tools I have developed and promote. Now I want to make a more permanent mark. I have a working prototype for a compact, folding floor loom that produces fine fabrics in complex patterns, and I am in the second draft of an instruction manual that covers how to build and use the loom, a loom that fits into the modern lifestyle. With the help of funding from the Kickstarter community, I would like to bring the loom design to completion, and get this meditative, productive process into as many households as possible. This would be achieved through a three-pronged approach: 1) to fully develop a print manual with photographs, and on-line version with video tutorials; 2) to promote and distribute a full weaving studio kit, featuring all the lumber and hardware needed; 3) to designate weaving hubs of interest, where new weavers can connect with local masters, or, if there's a lot of interest and no local masters, I'll come out for a week and get you started! Please visit http://actionweaver.com to see more and get convinced!
I have set the funding goal at $5000 but really I could use a hundred thousand, to develop a complete handicraft infrastructure in 2012. And I'd love to really publish this book, send out hundreds of laser looms, thousands of paper looms, and make dozens of visits to establish cottage industries all over. I could even come back to America.

I am from the San Geronimo Valley in California, and live in Berlin, Germany, where I have my world weaving headquarters, constantly working out ways to make the productive act of weaving as engaging as, say, watching "two and a half men." I have a BA in Industrial Arts and a MFA in Textiles and Social Practices, so I feel uniquely qualified for this revolutionary project.
