Day 12:

Update #6 · May 18, 2012 · 1 comment

As promised, here's a spread that I needed to remove from the News chapter. Below is the text:

Anywhere else in the world they’d be called hurricane-force winds. Alaskans call them “Chinooks,” and they can create havoc for homeowners. When air pressure from Prince William Sound builds on the far side of the Chugach Mountains and comes roaring over the peaks and through mountain passes, a Venturi effect is created. And hell follows it.

The roof torn off and her home destroyed, Ella Sampley, right, was comforted by her daughter-in-law Angela at the Dimond Estates trailer where Ella lived for twenty-six years. The elder Sampley had her coat on, ready to flee, and watched as the roof flexed and then pulled loose in high winds.

“It was just unreal, just crazy.” The roof peeled off, landing on the trailer next door, and in the darkness “I’m seeing the moon and stars”, she said

In November 1984 I photographed the remains of a mobile home lean-to north of Anchorage and was up in a tree for a better angle when a neighbor walked around the back and realized the full extent of the damage to the home.

Alaska is a harsh place and sometimes Anchorage residents, used to the comfort and perceived security of a big city, were overwhelmed when the real Alaska raised its head.
