**UPDATE**
I am proud to announce that "One American Dream?" was awarded a 2010 Puffin Foundation artist grant.
PREMISE
What does the American Dream mean to Generations X & Y?
The Baby Boomer generation and the generation before them held the traditional idea that success and the American Dream was having two kids, a car, and a house in the suburbs. However, young adults today no longer hold the same traditional ideals and goals due to changes in technology, society and the economy. Every generation must decide what ideals and goals are most important to them.
Today, young adults have more opportunities and stresses due to the connectivity of the Internet and social networking. No matter what intrigues them, there is an outlet and a group of like minded people on the internet to socialize with. On the flip side, young adults are now constantly aware of what their peers are doing and are faced with the constant comparison and critiquing that occurs on social networks. How has connectivity affected their dreams and goals for the future?
Due to the availability of information and ease of travel, other cultures and societies are now more accessible to young adults. This has caused many to feel more compassionate about other people and ways of life that weren't felt in the generations before. It has also made them aware of other lifestyles which may allow them to happier in life. But do so many choices make Generations X & Y better off?
The recent financial meltdown and the lack of employment opportunities has burdened many young adults with no viable means of having a meaningful vocation. A college degree doesn't necessarily mean as much when former executives are also applying for an entry level position. It has also left the recent graduate under a mountain of debt which they will have to pay off with the non-existent career. Living in a different economic environment, how have their priorities shifted?
All of these factors have contributed to a new definition of success and the American Dream.
THE DOCUMENTARY
"One American Dream?" is a documentary exploring how the traditional idea of the American Dream has changed and what it now means to Generations X & Y. As a feature length documentary, "One American Dream?" will follow the journey of producer David Pond as he travels around the country in search of how the vision of success has changed and what the American Dreams of today's young adults are.
People from all walks of life will be included in "One American Dream?". From the CEO, to the recent immigrant who came to the United States to improve the lives of their family, to the recent college graduates who are looking for a job.
"One American Dream?" will also include experts the the fields of business, economics, social sciences and politics to put things in perspective. From where the American Dream has come; to the politicization of the American Dream; to current economic situation; to the struggles faced by Generations X & Y.
WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL GO TOWARDS
“One American Dream?” is going to be a low budget, high quality movie. The funds hopefully raised through this Kickstarter campaign will allow production to begin. Primarily these funds will go towards covering travel expenses for the crew to travel around the country. They will also go towards necessary gear purchases.
Please visit the "One American Dream?" production blog + website- www.oneamericandream.com for more info.
