We are 80% done with a feature length horror movie in the form of a tension driven slasher film, and we just need a little help to finish it.
Hi, my name is Brad Rego and I am the writer/director/producer of The Killing of Jacob Marr
Twenty-five years ago a boy by the name of Jacob Marr, living in the back woods of Maine, discovered a strange object that had fallen from the sky. Fascinated by this thing, he took it home to examine it. A boy's curiosity, however, is soon turned into a ghastly nightmare as something in the object corrupted his young mind with horrifying thoughts. Late one night he slowly crept into his parent's bedroom and killed them one after the other, escaping into the deep woods behind his house. He took nothing with him, nothing but the object and the blood stained clothing on his body, never to be seen again. Until now.
After lying dormant for so many years, the house has been repurchased as a vacation rental. Repairs are made and the first tenants are a group of five friends looking for a winter getaway from their dull workaday lives. Unfortunately for them, the weekend becomes anything but dull as Jacob returns from the woods to find intruders in his boyhood home. He is not happy and he will have his vengeance.
Last summer I set about to do something that I felt was severely lacking in the horror movies I had been watching on the big screen of late. I wanted to make a slasher movie that took its time and did more then just jiggle something gross in front of the screen every five seconds while repeatedly banging on a keyboard to elicit a response from the audience. I wanted back some of the old school horror movies of my youth that had to rely on tension and suspense to sell themselves because they couldn't afford wall to wall special effects. So came The Killing of Jacob Marr.
I wrote the screenplay over the summer, and after ironing out some issues, I really felt I had a solid script that worked on all the levels that I wanted. It was tense, suspenseful, funny, and smart. So with script in hand I immediately began preproduction. This process lasted about six months but when I was done I was lucky enough to get a great cast on board and a handful of crew members that were just as excited about the project as I was. So banding together we marched on with a clear task at hand. Next up was budget, how much was it going to cost to make this movie? As with any indie filmmaker, I wrote the script with costs always in the back of my mind. I tried to keep settings to a minimum without jeopardizing the story or character development, and after budgeting out the costs of the film I calculated $11,500 for everything. Not too bad for a 100-108 minute movie. That being done, we set filming dates of January 8th, 2010 - June 6th, 2010, filmed all on weekends as we all have day jobs, and I set out to raise the funds we needed to get the movie shot.
By the time the first of the year came around we were only able to raise 80%of the budget , 50% from friends and outside investors and the other 30% from me. Rather then pushing the filming date back and asking my cast and crew to hang on for more funds, I decided to start shooting and continue to do some fundraising as we made the picture. Of course once we started, who had time for fundraising?
So here we are, its April and we have finally exhausted our funds. The good thing is we are on budget and have the movie 80% shot and we just have a few filming days left between now and June 6th. However those are costly days and we desperately need the remaining $3000 of the budget for things like the continuing rental of the cabin, insurance, food for the cast and crew, travel expenses, special effects, set dressings, as well as the post production sound mixing, and color correction.
That brings us to you and your ability to help us complete this picture and make a great horror movie that everybody can be proud of. We are so close right now but we just need a little push to get us over the top. So far we have been fortunate enough to get some good buzz even though we haven't finished filming yet. We are already listed on IMDb, we had an article about our film on Fangoria's web page, and we have over 1400 fans on our Facebook Fan page. So I really feel like we are off to a good start.
Once the film is completed it will be making the festival circuit while also being shopped around to distributors as well. The last feature movie I made got into Netflix, Blockbuster and a whole host of retail stores and I see this one as going even further. The cool thing is you may one day see this movie in a store somewhere or on Netflix and be able to say that you helped bring it to life.
So check out our first official trailer above and hopefully you will get excited like we are.
