Meet the world's first 3-in-1 pedal trike and balance bike combo, the YBIKE Evolve. A developmental ride-on for kids ages 2 to 5.
Thank you all for your faithful support! We met our goal in just 16 days!
Keep sharing and spreading the word 'cause we are have some great stretch goals to reach now. 15 more days to place your order.
Designed to save you money and space, the YBIKE Evolve will put a smile on any child's face. Please pledge your support to help make our dream come true.
The expected retail price, when the Evolve hits the shops will be $150. Save up to 60% by pledging now.
The YBIKE Evolve combines 3 products into one:
1. Pedal trike: In this mode your young child can master the art of pedaling, which he/she will need later as he/she progresses to a bicycle.
2. Balance trike: On the balance trike, your young child will take the first critical steps towards freedom on a bicycle. In order for them to safely ride a bicycle, they need to learn the art of balance, get confident and grow their motor skills. The wide "single" rear wheel allows the child some support with limited instability. It is this instability which forces them to counter-lean when they feel they will fall over. Once you see this happen you will understand the magic that got us hooked.
3. Balance bike: The final step before riding a bicycle like a pro! Get ready to be amazed. Your child would by now have learned to balance and they will take to the final stage with great ease.
The design is simple and easy to understand! The transformation is a breeze! With the rubber wheels the Evolve is perfect for indoor play as it won’t scuff your floors and is quiet. It’s also great for outdoor use. Your child can learn how to balance on a bike that encourages gross motor skill development through different stages.
The YBIKE Evolve will help your child move onto a bicycle in a short period of time without the negative effects and injuries caused by the use of training wheels.
We are still wondering why no one else came up with this, it just makes sense!
The above prototype was machined in a workshop and the final product will be produced with injection molding and CNC machinery, which will look very similar, apart from the colors and additional graphics. We also offer a "Limited Edition" to Kickstarter fans and this will be green and white.
At YBIKE we set ourselves a goal to make a helpful and cost effective bike which will last through the many stages of your child’s development. We focused on making it fun to use but also easy to transform.
The Evolve was designed so that your child can learn how to balance independently and at their own pace. The only time you would get involved is during the simple transformation from one form to the other; a process that takes only a few minutes. This will need to be done once the child is ready to move on to the next stage of the Evolve's transformation. Think about it, it’s like having a transformers bike!
This design is unique in that its patent pending mechanism easily converts the product into each of the three biking options. The challenge was to ensure that the functioning of each of the biking options was not compromised. The design had to allow for simple and quick assembly for parents, converting to each biking option, with only basic tools and parts included with the product.
Although the mechanism seems quite simple, it had to pass international toy safety laws in each of the three biking options.
We started out wanting to design a tricycle at the request of our business partner in New York.
We did some research into tricycles and realized that children need to learn 2 important skills to be able to ride a normal pedal bicycle. They must learn to pedal and learn to balance.
During further inspection of existing products on the market, we found that different products focused on developing different skills. Parents had to choose the one (tricycle) or the other (balance bike). The breakthrough moment came to us as we realized we can save the parents money and make the transgression from trike to bike much easier for the child.
The design had to focus on targeting the correct skill at the relevant age, and be fully functional and easy to convert into each biking option.
The first design was created as a tricycle for ages 2 to 5 years. From rough hand sketches, a first order CAD model was built to test the rough concept. This was a relatively quick process as we already have experience in developing other children’s ride-on's.
Prototype 01: On prototype one we still played around with the trike only design. Shortly after this the idea for the 3 in 1 Evolve came about.
Prototype 02: As can be seen in the picture we had by now a prototype with swinging rear forks. This prototype was based on our first 3 in 1 design and we tested various locking mechanisms for the back arms, the quick lock system for the pedals, and the seat design.
Prototype 03: Here we refined the back arm locking mechanism and explored changing the back swinging arms from an extrusion with plastic caps to complete plastic molded, fiber reinforced arms. Something we decided to keep on final production.
Prototype 04: With this version we updated the frame and seat design. We also did strength testing on the plastic back arms to determine the amount of fiber we would need to use in production to give us optimal strength in the rear fork.
Prototype 05: This is the off-tool sample/prototype for final tweaking. This unit is basically the model just before mass production. It is our final chance to make tiny adjustments to the tools before we can start manufacturing orders. We do toy law testing, endurance testing and we test its performance under play.
Conceptualization: After coming up with the idea we investigated and refined the concept. We did quick concept models which focused on the resolution of shape, form and function of the product. This was done with concept drawings and basic CAD renderings. More detailed 3D CAD modelling followed, demonstrating the basic form, components and assembly.
Once we had a first order concept design we were happy with, we started talking to manufactures to give us feedback on unit cost, tooling cost and timelines.
Detailed Design (1st Order): The initial feedback and quotes we received from the manufactures proved that the product was financially viable, which led to a detailed 1st order design.
We also started with endurance testing to ensure the product is strong enough for the age group it is designed for. The prototypes also went to the Toy-law testing labs to ensure the final design will pass all Toy laws.
Detailed Design (Engineering Model): Once we were happy with the refined 1st order design and prototype testing results we started with the detailed design of the Evolve.
The issuing of the final technical files (data pack) for production was done. We also reconfirmed the Evolve unit and tooling costs.
During this phase we further completed the graphic designs to go on the product as well as the design of the packaging. It is a critical step as the various toy laws like EN71 and ISO1024 are very specific when it comes to this. One can easily fail these tests.
Manufacturing: Part of the final quote from the manufacturer included the production plan. Below is a breakdown of the plan.
1. Ordering of steel and graphite to manufacture the injection molding tools that will be required for production. Done
2. Manufacturing of the enormous tools to use in production, these tools will be under 450 tons of pressure as the melted plastic gets injected into it. In progress. Your pledges will assist us in paying these tools.
3. The manufacturing of the bending and welding jigs. In progress
4. The manufacturing of the 1st off tool samples. In progress
5. The tooling update after off-tool samples evaluation. In progress
6. The update of the tooling for mass production. In progress
What is next: As can be seen this project is already at a very mature stage. We are in the process of completing the tooling update and off-tool sample testing and we have submitted samples for Toy law testing: AS/NZS ISO 8124 , EN 71, ASTM F963 and Canadian Toy Standards We are certain the Evolve will pass as we kept the testing labs in the loop during the design cycle.
We applied for provisional patents and these should be granted soon. Within months thereafter we have to register the patents for the USA and EU countries. It is a process we understand and have done a few times. In progress
Our next step is to market the YBIKE Evolve 3 in 1 effectively and to get orders. Once we have confirmed orders and paid the production deposit, the factory will purchase the raw material to start with production.
To summarize: Tooling completed and final updates being done, samples at toy-law testing labs and results expected soon, patents applied for, packaging and Owner's manuals designed and ready, all product decals designed and ready and final costings completed to land products in stores worldwide.
Your pledges will contribute to the costs of Patents, Marketing and payback on tooling.
Jean and Jaco co-founded Chrome Cherry Design Studios with 3 of their friends so that they can chase their dreams of product development.
Together with Jean's wife, Mariza, they are the core team in this small, but very dynamic company. As parents of young children they understood the need to develop their kids' gross motor skills and decided to develop the original YBIKE balance trike. The YBIKE Original made its way into 44 countries around the globe and won many awards
The success of the original came to the attention of Gregg Adelsheimer, a NY based distributor of quality wheeled product for kids. He joined forces with YBIKE and is today a key figure in the expansion of YBIKE into the USA.

The overall reaction we've received from people has been very positive. The only question people have is where and when can I get one?
This is where our Kickstarter campaign comes in to play! We need your help to bring the Evolve to kids and parents (wanting to keep their back yards clutter free) everywhere. We have already done most of the hard work and have invested a large amount of our time and money to bring the Evolve to where it is today.
Both the product design and engineering has been completed. The tooling is in final adjustment phase and should be ready to start mass-producing the Evolve 3 in 1 trike soon. We are finally in the home stretch.
Now we need our target market to support us, to pledge and in so doing give us a vote of confidence. We need to raise $25,000 to help us finance our first large scale production of the Evolve and contribute towards patent and tooling costs.
So if you think the Evolve looks awesome and it resonates with the money savvy and space aware person within you, please consider being a part of what we are trying to do. We aim to make learning to balance and moving on to a bicycle a breeze for any child.
Thank you… this won’t be possible without your support!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
As a company we have experienced delivering products to market on a large scale and under strict deadlines. We don’t foresee any real challenges. The sample of Evolve functions very well.
We have launched successful products internationally of which the YBIKE Original is one.
Being a small company with only 4 employees we have set ourselves up to be pro-active and fast on our feet. We are used to handling very big challenges. We don't own infrastructure and have very low overhead costs. Our business is sound and we have the experience of delivering products to well known international stores.
Our manufacturing partner supplies products to "Toys R Us" in the USA, our current production capacity per month would be 7000 units and this can be doubled in 6 weeks.
Delivery should not be a problem as we are working with professional Logistics companies in both the USA and the UK, in order to guarantee efficient delivery to the USA and the EU respectively.
Jaco Kruger (YBIKE Managing Director), Jean van der Merwe (YBIKE Head of Design) and Gregg Adelsheimer (Sales and Distribution) are qualified with numerous year’s experience in design, marketing and distribution and could tackle any unforeseen challenges together.

The patent pending conversion mechanism allows for the black rear swing arms to move into 3 different positions. With each new position, the wheels are removed and re-assembled again for each specific mode. This is a simple process using only a few bolts and the set of Allen keys, all included with Instruction Manual in the packaging.
No. The pedals and the turning mechanism is designed for use as a tricycle only. Using the pedals with the other biking modes may cause accidents and injury.
We have done this before with success when we brought the YBIKE Pewi and other products to market.
Yes, Evolve has been designed with kids’ safety and relevant toy safety laws in mind. Evolve has passed AS/NZS ISO 8124 , EN 71, ASTM F963 & Canadian Toy Standards laws.
Yes of course you can, when you are going through the process of pledging please add a note to our team to either not include your name on the Wall of Fame or to nominate another name for inclusion. Please do make sure that you have the permission of the nominated person.
Currently internationally we only deliver to EU countries, Canada and South Africa outside the USA. However, when the Evolve goes into retail sales it will be sold worldwide.
Projects like ours truly benefit from being on Kickstarter, and in turn we feel obliged to respect the rules of the platform. One of Kickstarter's rules is that they do not allow for multiple/bulk purchasing - if you are interested, their thinking is set out in a series of blog posts, including this one: http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-is-not-a-store.
However, you are welcome to create a second Kickstarter account and pledge for a second Evolve for friends, family, roommates, etc. And don't forget there is also life after Kickstarter, which we have already started preparing for. Shortly after our Kickstarter ends we'll be accepting pre-orders directly via our website. These will be fulfilled not long after the first batch of Kickstarter orders, and you'll be able to order as many Evolves as you want... yes, one for every little one in your family.
Due to the way that we have designed our wheels the Evolve can be used both indoors as well as outdoors. Let the little ones explore different terrains with their Evolve.
The current Kickstarter prices for the Evolve appear alongside the backing levels in the right column. As for the price post-Kickstarter: There may be some Evolves during the first few launch days being sold for around $120, but the expected retail price would be $150-160.
As I am sure you can understand, the Kickstarter process is pretty time consuming, and we are very much focussed on delivering a good experience and good product to our backers. Theirs will be the first products shipped, followed by Evolve site pre-orders, and then wider sales channels.
We will start to look at wider distribution after the Kickstarter ends. If you want to stay up to date on where and when the Evolve will ultimately become available, we ask that you join our mailing list at www.YbikeUSA.com and we'll be sure to update you on any monumental events as and when they happen.
Unfortunately we will not be able to ship to schools ahead of time or in bulk quite yet. But, if you're interested in getting Evolve into classrooms, please drop us a line after the Kickstarter and we'll start the ball rolling so that when we are ready, we can move like the wind.
We intend to be fully engaged with our backers as we move forward with the Evolve. There will be frequent updates and progress reports. Once our Kickstarter period is over we will continue to share our progress as we prepare for production and beyond. We welcome feedback and will strive to answer any questions posted
If you are not joining us for the Kickstarter journey, we ask that you join our mailing list at www.YbikeUSA.com and we'll be sure to update you on any monumental events as and when they happen.
