Youth string quartet desire a week together practicing, performing, composing, and being coached by members of the Chautauqua Symphony.
Fifth Avenue Strings Chamber Music Camp in Chautauqua, NY. Our formerly all-violin quintet is transforming this summer to a traditional string quartet. We said goodbye to 2 violinists (we'll miss you Sophie & Marion!), Jimmy is switching to viola, and Alena is joining us on cello - we're ages 12-16 from Pittsburgh. We told our parents: instead of sending us to music camp what we really need is a week together to practice practice practice! They rented a house for a week at Chautauqua, and we have to learn all new repertoire and write viola and cello parts for some other pieces.
Brian Reagin the CSO's concertmaster has agreed to coach us (he once played with Yo Yo Ma and Andre Previn on TV! so he's not cheap - hence our kickstarter); we're going to play every day in Bestor Plaza to practice performing together; we invited our friend 14-yr old composer Sasha Voinov to join us for a couple of days to work together on some new pieces he's writing; we are excited to attend a concert almost every night in the ampitheater; and we're not going to lie to you we're also planning to eat ice cream DAILY, ride our bikes around the grounds, and maybe play some board games in between lots of practicing of course!
Your gift will pay for coaching lessons this week and gate tickets to Chautauqua so we can hear the amazing Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, a string quartet featuring Matt Haimovitz on cello and Pamela Frank on Violin, and Igudesman & Joo - a duo doing crazy things to make classical music fun.
Fifth Avenue Strings just finished a great year performing in wonderful places including Heinz Hall (we got to meet amazing violinist Joshua Bell!), Carnegie Hall (we performed a Voinov world-premier of a composition written for us, stepping up on that stage was scary and awesome - you can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhYyNyuFULM), the PA Governor's Mansion, and we like to volunteer with Musicians With a Mission by playing in nursing homes (what's cool is older people sing along to pieces we didn't even know had lyrics).
If we raise MORE than $500, we want to buy more sheet music (Volkwein's has some Gershwin arranged for string quartet, and we'd like to learn some Copeland and Foster); and especially it would pay for coaching lessons during the school year in Pittsburgh. Nicole Myers of Cello Fury has agreed to coach us (Cello Fury just completed a successful Kickstarter project for their national tour), and we want to do some group lessons with Mr. Devin Arrington, our private violin teacher (whose studio for many years was on Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, hence our name).
Fifth Avenue Strings was started by two of our moms who realized if we were playing music with friends, it would be fun and we would keep practicing. And it worked!
You are invited to become one of our backers, then sit back and watch (and listen) as your investment grows into beautiful chamber music! You can keep up with Fifth Avenue Strings via our Facebook page...please "Like" us. We have many songs posted by our quintet, and we'll continue to post recordings throughout the next year. A hand-written thank you note from one of our young musicians. Not texted, not tweeted, not emailed, not even typed...we're talking an actual piece of correspondence hand written in ink delivered by your nice mail carrier (at least our mail carrier is nice - his name is Ken and he has many tattoos and was in the Marines - we hope your mail carrier is nice, but either way you'll get the note.)Estimated delivery:

A CD of the Fifth Avenue Strings performing classical, American, and fiddle favorites....to be recorded this fall 2012, hopefully by October, if we don't have too much homework. [And BTW if you're a teacher, how about lighten up on the homework...we have gigs to practice for, merit badges to work on, and we volunteer for Musicians With A Mission, so we're busy! If you're not a teacher we're sorry to have wasted your time, but feel free to pass it on.]Estimated delivery:

A LIVE PERFORMANCE (45-60 min) by Fifth Avenue Strings of classical, fiddle, or holiday favorites at a private or public event of your choosing. Be creative...we've done weddings, pre-concert lobby entertainment, private parties...but we could play at your nephew's 4th birthday party (little kids love us!), outside your ice-cream store to help attract customers (we're partial to mango and pistachio). Now we hate to bring up the homework thing again, but this will have to be at a mutually agreed upon date which usually cannot be a school night, but can be Fri., Sat. night or anytime Sunday (we can even do special music at your church).Estimated delivery:
