April 5 I will open my studio to the public and give away t-shirts printed to read I [insert graphic] [insert place name].
My research and artistic practice are concerned with how one articulates a subject position caught between inclusion and exclusion. Thursday April 5, 11 other artists and I will open our studios to the public as we do twice a year. The work I will share with the visitors is my newest project, I Insert. Materially, this work consists of t-shirts that read I [insert graphic] [insert place name]. This is a play on the ubiquitous recognizability of derivatives on the, I [heart] NY design. The work is activated by the visitors, who will receive a shirt and be asked to put it on. The lack of specified graphic and place name indicates a type of displacement. At the same time a literal reading of the text “I [insert graphic]” gives each wearer an individual agency. Although each visitor has the same shirt, each has a subjective potential.
