The Patsy is the latest film about misanthropist, knee-jerking flatfoot Jack Hersey and his crew...
The Patsy is a 22 minute animated pilot set in the same world as Rocket Science! and Grime City PD, both of which you can watch here.
We are doing it because we love the characters and the world (and the genre pics that influenced it all), as the final stage in a trilogy, and most importantly of all as a full-length pilot. Rocket Science was a learning curve, Grime City PD was compromised by length (11mins). So we are doing the full monty.
Our main character Jack Hersey is a nineteen-fifties style flatfoot inhabiting the present. He leads the Grime City police force through a series of adventures with fuzzy logic, unabshed bigotry and knee-jerk dynamism. He's abetted by progressive 'scientist' Patricia Murdoch and bumbling innocent Billy Sherbet, who is torn between his two contrasting mentors...
We are funding this ourselves but want to push on financially and make the best possible project we can. And when the film is done we'll be teaming up with a producer to take it to broadcasters and seeing if we can't get our series going.
If you've got a question about the project send it to firstname.lastname@example.org - we answer emails!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Making a film is never easy - especially one that is self-funded and self-led. We all have to fit our 'proper' work and normal lives around the production, and our cast are split over two continents! So there are logistical obstacles to overcome, from assembling the voice tracks from disparate recordings, to keeping on budget through a long production, and most of all somehow managing to animate 22 minutes with two animators - that's a whopping 33,000 frames. The biggest challenge is the sheer scope of what we are trying to do - a full 7 minutes longer than our first film, Rocket Science! After production there is a fresh set of demands: getting the film from one small - or very large - digital file onto festival screens, and in front of broadcasters and financiers. Setbacks are part of the terrain here, and our aim is to remain undeterred and unwavering in our belief that these characters will make a great series.
