Red Shift is a new take on tabletop role play, which seeks to become a new staple in the community.
Red Shift is a new spin on the tabletop role playing games of old. This genre blending science fiction/middle fantasy RPG allows players who want to play spell flinging elves to stand beside futuristic soldiers in digitally camouflaged body armor with nary a second glance.
Here is the premise:
In the near future mankind was in a state of total war and growing weary as their war efforts helped in bringing about a new ice age that was colder than any before. Scientists estimated that it would be another 100,000 years before the Earth was habitable again. In desperation we looked skyward and built a variety of craft to ford the stars and see what they offered.
Unfortunately, no craft could reach far enough to find another planet that was livable in the time that they had, but nearly one hundred thousand years had passed since most of man had seen the Earth. Upon returning the planet had once again become a green oasis in the stars, but life had carried on in unexpected ways.
Landing on the surface they found things that were thought to exist only in fantasy. Orcs cavorting in the forests, nations of men with steam powered weapons, and even Elves that could thread a needle with a bow and arrow. What's more, magic had become all too real and many novelties of technology were forgone as there was an easier way to do it with magic.
This is where your story as a player begins. Be you a halfling warrior from the desert or a curious scientist from a time long forgotten, a world of adventure awaits you.
The mechanics of the system are still being nailed down, but I can provide a brief overview:
>This is a stat based system with 4 stats; Brawn, Intelligence, Deftness and Stamina
>All skill checks are made using a combination of d6s which can be added to at will by the player
>Your stats create a "pool" of dice at your disposal to use in combat or performing various checks
>Combat is designed to be brief and cinematic with few hits, but lethal consequences
>Magic tends to require more lateral thinking, but there are still fireballs!
>The system is designed so that it accommodates both high and low level play with ease. Both novices and veterans will feel at home.
Below is a Google doc link to the first 27 pages of the full document. Sorry the document is so dry, but I can't show even my placeholder art since I don't own the rights to it. The cover is public though, so that can remain! This is rundown of the story, character creation, and species to whet your appetites.
I hope that this all sounds very compelling and interesting to you, a potential contributor. All funds collected through Kickstarter will go towards commissioning artists for their work, editors and publication fees for the final product.
Thanks for your time!
