Media that moves
The Caravana Documental is an itinerant route that goes through various points of the country teaching and promoting the documentary process. With a participatory video methodology, we enter a community and, within a week, we are able to produce with them documentaries that speak about their geography, customs, culture, political issues, art, or what ever it is they wish to say. The Caravana Documental is based on the idea and objective of the decentralisation and dissemination of processes in the use of the media and new information technologies. We believe in human capacity and the possibilities that exist through citizens and individuals acquiring communications uses and practices.
July 2012 - Lima, the capital of Peru holds around 10 million people and is a territory that reflects the totality of colors, races, tastes, languages and expressions of the overall national territory. But, it also evidences the social polarities and the negligence that happens in our country on a national scale. This is why we believe it is a perfect place to take the Caravana Documental.
How it works-
We will be traveling for a month: Four districts in four weeks, 16 documentaries, and 4 fanzines produced by the local participants.
An intensive route, with a week in each district. We are a team of 10 documentalists, photographers and artists. The idea is that we teach them how to play with some toys: cameras, microphones, computers and all other available tools to enter into the game of content creation in a participatory way. A few exercises and we're ready to get going. It does not matter if you are eight years old or if you are 50, if you have had contact with cameras and computers or not. The only thing that matters is that you wish to say something. A total of 120 participants: children, mothers, teenagers and community leaders involved in the process of making their own documentary.
We have selected 4 peripheral districts in Lima: Lomas de Carabayllo, San Juan de Miraflores, Villa el Salvador, and Barrios Altos. Some of these districts have been inhabited by what is known as "invasions" meaning that large areas of these districts do not count with the support and services of the state since they have settled and built their homes without any legal documents ocupying the territory since the early 90's. About 20 years later, they still do not count with some of the basic services, they are still neglected by authorities, and many social issued have emerged. Contamination, violence and gangs, sexual exploitation, exclusion, human rights violations are some of the issues we can find.
We have not been able to recieve support from private businesses and public entities. This is why DOCUPERU is relying on the support of private funds and donations from people like you. Please help us to achieve our goal of using media and technology in a different way, an inclusive way.
Docuperu has already contacted the local organizations in each of these districts. We have met with them and some of the community leaders and they have assured us the participation of the community, helped us find some of the equipments such as projectors, screens and sound system and have provided us with a space where we can have clases, watch movies, open discussions and interact with the community. They will be also providing some of our meals, but not all of them. The cameras, microphones and computers will be provided by DOCUPERU. This pledge aims to collect the funds we need for transportation, cover the costs for food and lodging for the entire month, as well as a small salary for each of the members of the team.
We have a great selection of rewards including the documentaries produced during this caravan, photographs taken by our team of photographers and artists and the colection of documentaries produced by DOCUPERU over the last 10 years.
While the problems faced by the residents of these districts are complex, we strongly believe that La Caravana Documental will have a profound impact on the community. We intensively promote subjectivity as a principal element in the construction of new communications messages that correspond to the individual and community reality.
Who are we?
DOCUPERU is a Peruvian organization specialized in promoting independent documentary production in the country. Our mission is to document, promote, produce and encourage decentralized documentary processes and products as tools for expression and empowerment.
We are a team of 10 documentalists, photographers and artists. We have produced as a team over 130 documentaries using the participatory methodology. Some of our documentaries have been selected and won in International festivals in Peru, Bolivia, Spain and Canada.
This is not the first Caravana Documental we have done. In fact, this is the eighth edition of the project. How ever, it is our first Caravan in Lima, our capital. Never have we done this project in such an urban area and we are excited to see the results.
So far, we have been able to visit 23 communities throughout the whole country, 600 different Peruvians have participated in the production of 121 documentaries, and over 6000 people have attended our projections. And, since we believe in free access of distribution of information and culture, all of our documentaries are downloadable and free for public use. Memory, society, ecology, culture, gender and youth are some of the topics developed and systematized by the Caravana Documental therefore becoming a space for discussion and reflection of collective memory and individual and group identity.
