About this project
Help the movie THE BOARDER to reach its finishing funds and get worldwide distribution!
We are in the final stages of completing the movie THE BOARDER!
We enlisted a very dedicated and talented cast and crew, and with the most generous support from citizens and businesses in Ravenna, Nebraska (providing locations, permits, meals, and more), we shot THE BOARDER utilizing the very latest digital technology. This movie has been the result of a wonderful collaboration and, remarkably, it was produced on a shoe-string budget, a truly independent venture realized through the contributions of friends and plenty of good will.
We are extremely excited to announce that we are ready to start the Post Production phase! Film Festivals around the world have already shown interest in our movie… BUT we have a long way to go in order to get there and we need your help!
With this Kickstarter Campaign, we hope to continue in that spirit and raise a minimum of $15,000 to help us finish the movie to spread its important message to the world. We’re covering costs with credit cards at the moment, and we have to face considerable post-production expenses, including editing, color correction, sound mixing, music and outputting the movie to an HDCam Master for exhibition in Film Festivals. In addition to this, we are looking at costly marketing expenses including hiring publicists, printing promotional materials, finishing the trailer, improving the website, submission to Film Festivals and do whatever it takes to get a worldwide distribution and spread the world.
The post production phase will last 8 weeks and if we can get the funds from Kickstarter we could finish the movie on November 2011!
We'd be over the moon if you could donate to our project! Every dollar counts!
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE WRITER
Wow, another first for us! We NOW begin the important KICKSTARTER fund raising campaign! Dear THE BOARDER Supporters and Team Members, I have a request: Since I believe THE BOARDER is a God-given and God-driven project, I ask that each and every email you send in search of supporters and donations be accompanied by a prayer of thanks for getting to this moment, and to ask for His guidance with the remainder of our project.
I am overwhelmed with the good will and support for this invaluable project. From the bottom, and top of my heart, I thank you for all the thoughts and prayers that have been offered on our behalf. Alone, we can only scratch the surface; together we can make a real difference in the lives of attachment disturbed children and their families.
With God's blessings we'll see you at the movies!
WHAT IS THE BOARDER ABOUT?
You think superheroes don't exist? Well, after watching this film you might change your opinion. We think we are surrounded by silent heroes and through this film we would like to show YOU and the world who they are, and most importantly, that there is hope for us as a family, as a society, as part of this world.
Jane E. Ryan is the author of Broken Spirits Lost Souls, a non-fiction book offering an overview about the effects of bonding interruptions through neglect and/or abuse. Thanks to the success of her first book, Ryan wrote a novel and the award-winning screenplay entitled The Boarder, which demonstrates Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) in the most vivid, personal way – within the arms of a family desperate to understand and help their disturbed son.
THE BOARDER is based on Broken Spirits Lost Souls and Jane Ryan's own experiences with two disturbed adopted children and of several families who, like Jane, believed they could simply love the problem away. Sadly, the lack of parental support and education about what their children's pasts and behaviors hindered their ability to develop in healthy ways.
Starring the young rising star Andy Scott Harris, Leslie Stevens, Carlton Wilborn and Dee Wallace; THE BOARDER is the first movie that approaches adoption from a different-and-fresh perspective. Inspired by true-life events THE BOARDER is the sobering story of the Williams family, our and their process of coping with Carl, an adopted child suffering from Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD).
These children suffering from RAD are real heroes, they have been dealing at a very early stage of life with the most awful and sad experiences you can ever imagine. Foster parents are superheroes too that are really saving and improving lives around the world. We can all help them by making this film a reality and let them live the wonderful life ALL human beings deserve.
Directed by Jolene Adams and Co-Directed by Jane E. Ryan, THE BOARDER is a movie that will take your breath away!
WHAT IS REACTIVE ATTACHMENT DISORDER (RAD)?
The term Reactive Attachment Disorder is used in both the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, and the revised fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). The following describes the problem:
Reactive Attachment Disorder has been described in clinical literature for many years as a rare but severe form of Attachment Disorder which can arise from a failure to form normal attachments with primary caregivers. Such failures can result from severe and early neglect, abuse and/or abrupt separation from primary caregivers during the first thirty-three (33) months of life, including while in utero or during the initial bonding phase of development.
Such problems can occur due to a lack of caregiver's responsiveness to child's efforts to communicate, frequent changes of caregivers, significant societal changes including staggering divorce rates, parental drug involvement, or wars around the globe. With increased threats to the safety of children and families everywhere, RAD is no longer considered rare as the number of children affected by neglect or abuse seems to be rising exponentially.
RAD is characterized by significantly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate ways of relating socially in most contexts. It can take on many forms, including a persistent failure to initiate or respond to most social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way. RAD can also present itself as indiscriminate sociability, characterized by excessive familiarity with relative strangers. It's important to note, that not all young victims of neglectful or abusive experiences result in Reactive Attachment Disorder.
The ultimate affects on vulnerable individuals tend to be determined by a combination of the degree and duration of the neglect or abuse combined with the internal strength of the individual child. To be diagnosed, children displaying symptoms need to be evaluated by Mental Health Professionals who have received specialized training in attachment problems.
Youngsters with RAD occur among all cultures and races, and clearly, no family or country is prepared to deal with them. Fortunately, there is hope and we should all know how to deal with this problem because it's among us. Currently mental health professionals believe that as many as 95% of the incarcerated adults in the U.S. now may have some form of attachment disorder. Now doesn't that just scare the life out of you? I don't know about you, but to us that's the sound of a siren warning us that all is not well in our families, our society, our world… and there is much to do to help...
Thanks for your donation! Please remember, you can also support this project by spreading the word within your friends, family, community...Let's use the magic of the social network! To join us on Facebook click here!

Important Note: For the video on Kickstarter we used the music of Ludovico Enaudi, a great Italian musician we deeply admire. We don't own the rights of his music, we wish! It would a dream to be able to pay for his music for The Boarder. Unfortunately, we don't have any music yet but hopefully with your support we will soon! Thanks!
