New Roots CD from Tucson bad girl guitarist and sophisticated songshaper. Funky fingerpicking & soaring Bhakti blues. Just needs dough!
Hi, all! I've had a bunch of beautiful songs burning a hole in my pocket for a few years now. This new work is so close to my heart and from such a deep place in myself that I'm being exceptionally picky about the quality of the recording and packaging, which is why I haven't put them out yet - I haven't had the funds to do it the way I envision it. The Shine From The Valley project has taught me that a timely vision can be manifested in the most unexpectedly beautiful, fun way when a community of like-minded people add their hearts and souls and resources to it, so I want to continue to ride this wave of Love and put more beautiful, inspiring, funky, earthy, healing sounds out into the world.
For those of you who knew Jonathan Holden, I made my choice to actually finish this CD the day he died. He always believed in my music, even when I was in doubt, and his spirit has been standing at my side egging me on for the last month and a half. There is a strange synchronicity to this - most of these songs are about the space between worlds, the experience of the Beloved, and the process of releasing loved ones who have moved on. I have to record these songs - that's my soul's mandate. Whether they actually become a product that people can take home and play depends on the funding of this CD project.
I love geeking out as my own producer, so I'm able to cut a lot of recording and mixing costs that way. I can also do my own funky graphic design. Still, there are unavoidable costs: paying some of our most talented musician friends (such as Sabra, Gary Mackender, Heather Hardy, Don Simpson, Rebecca Horton...) to add their life and creativity to the project; doing the most important tracking in a professional studio with much better equipment than I have; hiring another producer as a one-time consultant for feedback to help me take it to the next level; CD mastering by a professional lab to make it sound good on everyone's iPods and home stereos and radio stations; and release of the final product in beautiful, eco-friendly packaging that we can all feel good about.
$1800 is that absolute bare minimum that I can accomplish this all with for 300 CDs, considering that I've already put all of my recording budget into the project, some of the people involved are doing trade with me, I'm including remastered versions of some of the songs on Ornamental Oranges that deserve wider distribution, and I can take a chance with a cheaper mastering service. Any contributions over the target amount will go into making the CD that much better - I'll get a more reputable mastering service, get my beloved Harmony acoustic guitar a neck reset so I can actually play it on the CD instead of having to borrow a friend's guitar (the Harmony is a great recording guitar - you've been listening to it for years), get a real graphic artist, have a few more local luminaries contribute their talents... Honestly, I do need a lot more than $1800 to fully manifest the vision, but I'm keeping the target low just so the CD can happen at all.
This next CD can be a big, warm, juicy musical experience of Tucson's (and our extended musical family's) finest musicians, technicians, artists, and listeners (that's you!) contributing their talents, soul, and spirit. I feel what I'm doing here is a sacred act - I hope you can be part of it.
