Why we do what we do

Update #3 · Jun 5, 2012 · comment

As we hit the two week mark, and our fundraiser draws to a close, I have been reflecting on this project and what I have learned from it. My mind keeps coming back to passion, as I look at projects here on Kickstarter I can’t help but see the passion that goes into some of these projects. It is so inspiring to watch videos and see how much some people really want to do something great. The other day as I was watering the bus and a gentleman, in his sixties, stop by to asked for a tour. He admitted that he was not really in to gardening , but he had a great time viewing the plants and learning about aquaponics. As he was getting ready to leave he asked “ What are you so passionate about that makes you do all this work ?”

I am a passionate person who follow that passion to live my dreams. So what are my passions that make me do all this work? I am passionate about the earth and doing the best we can to take care of it. I am passionate about urban agriculture and the possibilities it presents. I am passionate about eating food that taste great and is good for you. I am passionate about helping people, to be able to do for others what they can no longer do for them self. But mostly I am passionate about inspiring people, and I fell like I am good at it.

I love talking to other and getting them excited about growing their own food. Many of them mention that they would love to start a garden but don’t know how. It is a pleasure to give them seeds, advice and the encouragement they need to get started. Children are always my favorite visitors in the bus. I have worked with kids for a along time and love their enthusiasm and spirit. To see them inside the bus and hear them say  things like; this bus is actually cool and fun, makes all the hard work worth it.

I hope my passion shows in this Kickstarter. It has been hard for me to design a webpage that conveys all that I want to express. I have struggled to show the potential of what we are doing and hope to accomplish. I have tried to display the thought, work, and purpose that goes into all that we do. Anyone who knows me, will tell you writing is not my strength. I have some personal struggles that have always made this a hard outlet for me. I hope you can look past that and see this project for what it is. It has been great to see so many of you support my passion. Donations have come from so many unexpected place and I am truly grateful for all your help.

The Home Stretch

Update #2 · Jun 3, 2012 · comment

It has been a very busy week and a half. Not only are things growing like crazy in all of the gardens, but we have also added fish to aquaponics system on the bus. Last week we took the bus to Green Drinks and Mt. View Elementary School. We had over 200 people in the bus 120 kids planted plants to take home. This week we will be visiting a summer camp and fertilizing the our back-farm gardens. Farmers' markets start this week so it should shape up to be another busy week. Thanks again to every one who donated in the last few days. You are really helping move this project forward.

As we are in the last few weeks of our fundraiser, I thought I would take a moment to explain how kickstarter works and how we use the funds we raise. Kickstarter is an all or nothing fund raising platform. That means is if we do not reach our goal of $5,000 we do not get any of the money, so please tell your friends and help us reach our goal. You will be billed on the June 19th when we reach our goal. We will be shipping out your rewards about a month later.

This fall we will be visiting at least 25 schools and helping over 3,000 kids learn about gardening and eat healthier. So far, Shawn has donated the bus and funded all the improvements, with the exception of the aquaponices system that was created with help from a garden grant by Home Depot. This year we started 6 gardens for senior citizens at a total cost of less then $600. These gardens will provide thousands of pounds fresh produce to people in need. In short, your donation help us raise the necessary funds to keep these great projects moving forward.

You can be certain we will make every effort to make your donations go as far as possible. Thank you for helping out.

The Team at The Green Urban Lunch Box.

What a Great First Week

Update #1 · May 22, 2012 · comment
Hi every one it has been a fun first week on Kickstarter, thanks to every one that donated so far. It has been amazing to see all the support from so many people. While it has been tempting to set around and check the progress of our fund raising ever 5 minutes, we at the Green Urban Lunch Box have been very busy. We finished putting in our last garden for the back farm program. This garden was for a former master gardener, who due to being confined to a wheelchair can no longer garden. Brenda was so grateful to have fresh veggies growing in her yard once again. Each of our six gardens bring fresh food , beauty and joy to the community member that it serves.
Some on tagged our bus a few weeks ago so as we get ready for some visits in the next few weeks, we had some new art put on the side of the bus. This is just some of the painting we hope to do once we reach our fund raising goal.

And lastly thing have been growing like crazy, not just in the gardens but in the bus as well. We have harvested peas, strawberries, herbs, lettuce, spinach, and radishes so far. Thanks for all your help and if you have not donated please do even 5$ help a ton. If you have donated please tell your friends to donate. One again thanks for everyone’s help in making this a reality.
