About this project

The Creative Community, a vital presence for the arts on California's Central Coast and on the Web, is looking to stay afloat in difficult economic times. The show is hosted by David Starkey, co-produced by Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara Channels, and broadcast on cable television in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Ventura and Lompoc. Among the long list of creative people who have welcomed an opportunity to discuss their work in depth and without commercial interruption are novelists T.C. Boyle, Pico Iyer, Sue Grafton, Gayle Lynds and Erica Jong, California Poets Laureate Al Young and Carol Muske-Dukes, Santa Barbara Poets Laureate Barry Spacks and Perie Longo, new media artists Laurel Beckman and Steven Soria, composer Karen Tanaka, filmmakers Andrew Davis and Sam Tyler, Santa Barbara Symphony Music Director Nir Kabaretti and SB Chamber Orchestra Music Director Heiichiro Ohyama , opera baritone Mark Rucker, singer-songwriter Glen Phillips, R & B singer Anthony Prieto, architect Barry Berkus, stage directors Jonathan Fox, Risa Brainin and John Blondell, choreographer Rodney Gustafson, screenwriter Jeff Arch, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Walter Kohn, film star Tab Hunter, The Young & the Restless television star Doug Davidson, book artist Harry Reese, photographers Nell Campbell, Richard Ross, Sky Bergman and Patricia Clarke, sculptors Alison Saar, Colin Fraser Gray, Aris Demetrios and Bud Bottoms, book artist Mary Heebner, and painters Hank Pitcher, Rafael Perea, Maria Réndon, Manuel Unzueta and John Nava. In 2006 and 2007, The Creative Community received the Alliance for Community Media's National Award for Best Talk Show for interviews I conducted with underwater filmmaker Mike DeGruy and actor Mary Rose Betten. In October 2006, the program received the regional Western Access Video Award for Best Talk Show for an interview with television comedian Jim Hawthorne.

Funds donated to kickstarter will go directly toward future productions of The Creative Community.
