My name is Neil Maxey and I am a member of a unique community of musicians at Green Street United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. Collectively we are known as Sabbath Indigo. During the week, many of Sabbath Indigo's musicians perform throughout the Triad area playing/singing jazz and blues at festivals, bars, and a myriad of public and private venues.
Every Sunday Sabbath Indigo musicians come together at Green Street Church, a diverse, multi-cultural congregation with a deep commitment to social justice. The music is comprised of African-American spirituals and traditional hymns, all done with a jazz flair. Big Ron Hunter, Matt Kendrick, John Wilson, Brent Buckner, Bill Smith, and many other talented musicians make the music something really special.
The arrangements on this album are all written with Sabbath Indigo in mind and with the goal of bringing new life to well-worn hymn texts and tunes. It will include jazz-flavored arrangements of familiar hymns such as: "He Lives," "In the Garden," and "I Need Thee Every Hour." Others, such as "Like a River Glorious," "Just As I Am," and "At Calvary" come to life with new tunes. "Joshua's Fever" merges the familiar spiritual "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" with the iconic bass line from Peggy Lee's "Fever" to create a Sabbath Indigo fan favorite! The album will contain more than fifteen "playfully reverent" tracks.
Sabbath Indigo members playing on the album will include Matt Kendrick on bass, and John Wilson on drums; others like Big Ron Hunter, Brent Buckner, Kenny Barner, Margaret Wages, AmyBith Gardner, Jay Siskind and Brian Roberts will bring their musical gifts; Quique Rodriguez-Pastor will add his creative touch to the mix; and our own Sabbath Indigo Girls (and Guys) will provide backup!
