THE STORY

To where you go, do as you see / A donde fueres haz lo que vieres

Esperanza, a bright but inexperienced teenager, is traveling to the US alone for the first time to visit her grandmother. Along the way, Esperanza’s language barrier creates unforeseen challenges, leaving her stranded at a deserted bus stop.

Along comes Frank, a kind but lonely stranger, whose intentions become blurred with through miscommunication. With few options, Esperanza gets into Frank's truck in hopes of arriving at her Grandmother’s house safe.

THE INSPIRATION

In my own experiences abroad, I've learned that people - regardless of place - share many of the same dreams and needs. After my junior year of college, I spent six weeks living abroad in Italy. Before I'd even left the US, others had painted an image of dishonesty and crime abroad, but I'd found more love and compassion as a foreigner than I'd even experienced in my own country. Whether I was lost in a dilapidated train station or while hiking the foggy coastal hills of a small town, someone always reached out to help without wanting anything in return. My memories of the people I met will always be sharp in my mind.

These experiences have continued to stick with me as a constant reminder of the good in people, and as a testament to the strength of human kindness. With my thesis film, I want to recreate this experience and illustrate a moment of unexpected compassion. In my time abroad, I discovered that far too often, our prejudices are born out of ignorance. We judge others before we even begin to know them.

As my film career continues, I want to increase international media literacy and encourage others, especially the youth, to explore and understand foreign cultures. It's our difference that make us beautiful, not just similarities. My thesis film serves as a first step towards the kinds of stories I want to tell in my future career.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

After the initial shoot dates, there's always a possibility that scenes will need to be re-shot or picked up. This again incurs production expenses such as cast and crew meals and equipment rentals.

Additionally, in post-production we'll hire a composer to create an original score for the film, as well as creating promotional materials and DVD kits for the film festival circuit.
