Set in a future, cyberpunk New Jersey, KSW is an action-comedy full of bad jokes, dumb fight scenes, and complex social criticisms

What is KSW?
My comic, KSW, is an action comedy set in a ridiculous, near-future New Jersey. It’s a world plagued by rogue AI’s and outlet malls. It follows Shishkabob - a swordsman for hire - as he attempts to assassinate an experimental and “un-killable” cyborg named Sarah Warren. Bob and his mercenary team stumble around neo-Jersey as they fail their way toward Sarah Warren. They visit exotic locations like underground video arcades and corporate cafeterias. They battle cyborgs, mutants, and the conventions of traditional narrative. And not only that, they learn, they grow into themselves, and then Bob gets into fist fights with homeless people. Because KSW uses such a straightforward and simple plot, I have plenty of room to explore themes like consumerism and how to cope with loss through exaggeration and bad jokes - jokes like using product placement for products that don’t exist and by giving even the most exaggerated characters realistic motivations. In that way the story is as much about that plot as it is about the characters, the atmosphere, and Goldeneye for the N64.
I like to think of KSW as a more character driven King City or a more coherent Tank Girl.
Comics are the perfect medium. They
contain the strongest aspects of literature and movies while avoiding
the pitfalls of both mediums. Like film, comics are a sequential,
visual medium. They can have all the fast paced excitement of a Michael
Bay film or all the visual metaphor of a good movie. But comics aren't constrained by pacing the same way films are. A movie is a set length -
Expendables 2 is two hours long no matter how many people don’t go see
it - but a comic is different. A comic's pacing is influenced as much by the
page composition as the reader’s investment. And that investment makes all the difference. You
can’t just open a comic book and let the story happen to you. You have to actively read it.
You have to invest in a comic enough to engage with the story and turn its pages. And that investment is what makes traditional literature (and comic books) hit so hard. It makes a story personal, even if it’s just a stupid story about a cowardly,
loud-mouthed, assassin swooning over sex bots and the other monotonies of life.
Comics initially grab you because they’re a visual medium and then they keep you because they’re a narrative medium. Comics fall into this sweet spot between passive watching and active reading that sets them apart from their sister mediums and gives them this feel all their own.
Comics are awesome.
I started this comic four months ago. At the time, I was hoping to finish a 40 page story by the end of the semester. But when I had finished the 40 pages I realized that I still had so much more of the story to tell. So, it’ll have to be a graphic novel, 100 pages long at least. And now that it’s summer I have the time to finish it. The only problem is that I don't have the money.
If it is successful, Kickstarter will provide me with the resources to fund this whole project - from drawing and cleaning all the pages to printing and marketing the final graphic novel - and it will give me the resources to finish the project quickly, ideally resulting in a finished graphic novel by the end of the year.
Making the video for this Kickstarter was a lot of fun. It also took a lot of takes. Here's a video of all the "junk" that didn't make it into the main film.
Sad thing is that this video is totally better than the real one.

I've included a $5 for shipping in each of the rewards, which should cover the cost of shipping rewards in the United States. If you live outside the US then I might require more money to get your books and goodies - but don't worry, I'll include some prints or stickers or something to help offset the cost a little bit.

As well as all the fun stuff listed in the above reward, you'll receive a minor role in the comic. Now, when I say 'minor role' I don't mean a walk in role. That's what reward 11 is all about. Reward 12 is all about jokes and presence. You'll be in there, maybe you'll be a hilarious cab driver or an incompetent guard. But either way you'll have lines, you'll make an impression, and in today's world an impression goes a LONG way. Obviously we'll have to have ourselves a little chat to figure out how to fit you in - but that's why it'll be fun. I promise I won't send you inappropriate text message (often).Estimated delivery: Jan 2013

You'll get my thanks, a digital and TWO signed, physical copies of the book, AND you or your friend or character will get a SIZABLE role in KSW. I like to keep the scripting process organic, which means that I keep my outlines sparse and full of opportunities for YOU to show up and shine. I'll write you into the story as more than just a wee-walk in - but rather as a character that actually makes a difference. Think of it like this, with this reward you're not some schmuck working checkout at Bloomingdales. You're not even the floor manager. No, you're the effing REGIONAL MANAGER. You follow me? You will have a major impact on the events of at least one chapter, maybe more. We'll have to have a chat, maybe even a Skype date to iron out the details AND, unlike the $500 reward, I promise to send you as many inappropriate texts as you want.Estimated delivery: Jan 2013

In addition to every reward listed above, you will get my undying gratitude in the form of me flying to your house and babysitting your kids and/or hanging out with you. If you've got pets I'll walk and/or clean up after them AND I will bring you McDonalds (or whatever other fast food you want). You rule. And I am going to dedicate the book to you.Estimated delivery: Jan 2013
