A fast paced card game for 2-4 players that takes place in the fun filled world of internet forums designed by Andy Chambers.
Flame War is a stand-alone card game where each player takes the roll of a forum admin. Starting threads, posting, flaming, maybe some trolling, and perhaps even bringing up a certain Pony that might in fact be little and belong to someone you know...
Closing down threads scores you points, and the player who scores the most points when the game ends wins.
Here is a quick preview by Tom Vasel looking at the game. He got all the key points - a fun, fast, thematic game about internet forums! Thanks Tom! Oh yea, and @4:30...
Flame War is a fun and clever game about running a forum. Every card in the game represents a post made by a forum member, often directed at another member. Some are informational, some are random, and some are downright mean. The internet is a scary place for folks who like to read what other people write.
We will be posting full rules shortly, but you can get the basics in the video above.
First Stretch Goal Hit!
Thanks to all the backers, the first stretch goal has been hit. Now our "Convention Only" promo card will be included in every Kickstarter game we deliver (1 per game) - the only card featuring a decimal, cause we know how much everyone likes decimals. Just think of all the money you'll save on $8 convention soda!
There are 4 more stretch goal cards to unlock, so be sure to keep telling your friends, posting on Facebook, getting inappropriate face tattoos, and twittering like you've never twittered before.
The Flame War Story
We had a ton of fun launching MSfG on Kickstarter. When we were done, we thought about all the cool games we've played that have never been released. In particular, I thought about the little pocket games that game designers often bring to conventions or get togethers to play with other game designers (usually in bars). These games are usually great little easy-to-pick up games that are exactly what the designer intended as they are never designed for a publisher - they are made because an idea was there and the designer wanted to take it to conclusion.
We set out to find those games and make them. So we contacted a few of our favorite game designers and got some great submissions. Flame war is the first of these "Master of Game Design" games we are releasing. Designed by Andy Chambers (whose last gig was the creative director of Starcraft II!), the game is everything one of these games should be. Fast, fun, clever, and a game begging to be made.
Who We Are
Andy Chambers has been a professional game designer for decades. He’s a Brit, and as such, was pre-programmed at birth to like miniatures games and went on to be a lead designer at Games Workshop. Luke here at Fun to 11 was so effected by one of Andy's designs (WarHammer 40K 2nd Edition) that he knew he had to work in the gaming industry - eventually sleeping his way into a job. Luke even interviewed Andy for his completely craptastic fanzine called Warmaster in 1993!
Andy stayed at Games Workshop until he realized that having an on-site pub that accepted company issued money was probably not a good thing. He then designed bunches of other stuff, even working for a stint at Blizzard (the company, not the Diary Queen treat), where he was the creative director for StarCraft II.
Recently Andy has relocated back to Nottingham where he’s hoping to find a fat monk to hang out in the woods with.
Flame War is his game. This is a cat dressed like a pilot.
Fun to 11
We are a group of hobby game professionals who use our free time to bring out high quality games with no publisher interference directly to customers through the magic of Kickstarter. Our first game, the Miskatonic School for Girls was designed in-house. Flame War is the first in our "Masters of Game Design" series projects designed by some of our friends in the industry.
Be on a Card!
As this game is all about a variety of people posting on internet threads, we have some very special options for backers. Many of the cards in the game have space for flavor text. This text represents a comment - directed at another poster. We are opening up these opportunities for you to include your name, an avatar of yourself, and you get to choose who the comment is directed at! (all names are first name, last initial).
We have written the text for all of these cards, so you can pick one that is the most appropriate for your sentiment. There are 4 backing levels that get you the ability to be on a card, and each has it's own list of cards. If you choose one of those backing levels and want to get even more customized, you can write your own text to replace ours for $50 more. For the ultimate in customization, add $150 on top of your funding and you get to rename a card, we will create new artwork for it, and you get to write the text! We will need to approve all the text and card names first, so if you want to go this route, send us a direct message and we can start the process. All text will need to be appropriate to the game and the card it's for!
Here is an example of how a card will look, so you can imagine how you would look on a card! This is the avatar site we are currently working with, so all you'll need to do is make your avatar and send it off to us along with the card you are choosing and the names that get swapped in. We'll keep a running tally here of which cards are still available. This is going to be so much fun...
Back this Game and Stay Tuned!
We really appreciate you checking out Andy's game here. We are really proud to be part of bringing it to you and hope that you help us reach the funding required to bring it to life. Stay tuned to this space for more information including full rules, more game images, a bit from the designer himself, and hopefully some fun stretch goals!
Thanks again for your interest and for reading this far down in the post,
Kai, Dave, Rob, Jay, and Luke at Fun to 11
How to be on a card...
Pick which card you want to be on. There are three categories of cards, each one has it’s own level of funding listed.
After you fund at the right level to get the card you want, go to the comments and let us know which card it is you want, then send us a direct message with the same information. I’ll update the list every day or so to keep things clean.
We’ll contact you at the end of the campaign or earlier, and ask you for an Avatar, along with your “screen name” which must be first name and last initial only (of course, it doesn’t have to be YOUR first name and last initial if you don’t want it to be). If the flavor text has an “XXX” in it, that means it’s a response or a comment to/about someone. So we’ll need a second (again, first name, last initial) to put in there as well.
All names must be in English, and all Avatars have to be made on this site to keep things consistent.
There are options available to write your own flavor text for one of the card and even options for changing the name and art on a card. Look above to see how that works (basically, you click the same funding option, and then “upgrade” your choice by backing with a little more money and contact us to let us know which card you want to reserve and we work with you on text/art).
Lastly, if there are multiple of a card and you prefer the flavor text from an option that has already been taken, don’t worry, you can use that text too. For example, if your favorite of the three options for Shopped Pics is taken, you can pick the same text that someone else took for your card if you want as long as there is at least one Shopped Pic card still available.
If you have any questions, send us a message and we’ll do our best to get back to you. Here are the cards broken down by funding type. Because which card gets which number is still in a bit of Flux and art is still being done, I would suggest you make your decision based on whichever flavor text/theme strikes you as the most appropriate. Obviously, we'll start showing art as we finish it up - cause we think it looks great! Go Jay!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
