About this project
In "Studio H" we spend a year in the life of one of America's most innovative classrooms. The film follows Emily Pilloton and Matt Miller as they teach the fundamentals of design, architecture and construction to a class of high school juniors in rural North Carolina. Faced with rising unemployment rates, a struggling educational system and simmering racial tension the people of Bertie County North Carolina turn to Pilloton, Miller and their students for help. We discover that what the class designs and builds for their hometown has a chance to transform their community for generations to come.

It depends on the subject matter, but our films tend to take about 1-2 years to complete. "Wordplay" was pitched to Will Shortz, pre-produced, written (or "organized" -- we don't really "write" our docs the way a typical screenplay is written), photographed, edited by Mad Man Doug Blush, motion graphic-ed (or "Oakes-ed" as we say around here), scored by the great Peter Golub, and delivered to Sundance in under one year -- whew! It was a very busy year. "I.O.U.S.A." was completed start to finish in about 18 months, made all the more difficult by the fact that the story was changing as we went... the national debt went from an issue that nobody was talking about in November of 2006 to the most talked about issue on the planet by the time the film was released in August of 2008.
"Studio H" took over a year to shoot and we're still editing now... it will likely be 18 months start to finish.

Christine O'Malley and Patrick Creadon's two previous films Wordplay and I.O.U.S.A. premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to successful theatrical releases. They have partnered with award-winning writer/producer Neal Baer (Law and Order: SVU, A Gifted Man) for this project. Baer is a pediatrician and television writer who combines his passion for medicine and storytelling to present episodes that challenge the audiences' views on a spectrum of social and political topics.
