Update #32: The Decision to go for Awesome

Posted on May 17

Back in April, O and I knew we had to make a decision. Because of all the other delays tripping us up, we knew that we were going to miss the projected ship date for Scurvy Dogs. We were close, but we weren't done with our initial plans.

I put together a plan that involved less-detailed art for the Booty Challenges. Icons instead of scenes. There were other spots where we could cut-and-paste art. And we could settle for less.

But it just didn't feel right.

We already had all 40 crew cards done, and 8 captains, and 12 different ships. What was another 50 or so pieces of art? Well, the obvious answer was two more months, as some private delays cropped up this past month to slow us down again. In this time, we also found out how much time it takes a boat to get from China to New York, how much time it takes something to clear customs, and how long it takes a truck to go from New York to Maryland.

I'm not trying to jinx it, but in the next 24 hours, we should be finished uploading files to our printer's server. 120 different card designs, an amazing board, about a hundred detailed tokens, and a shiny box. This means that the board game should show up at my office in the middle of August, and be shipped out immediately after that.

And right now, I'm really proud of this decision. For your consideration, I give you a peek at what the board will look like (there's two small edits and a few bits of text to be added):

Same here, I'd rather wait a few more months for a quality product than getting a rushed one earlier.

Wow. That is gorgeous. I'll wait as long as it takes.

(And on the bright side for us - we'll know where we're living by August! :p)

I'm with everyone else. Awesome is always worth waiting for.

Update #31: A really bad delay

Posted on April 17

Guys:

Scurvy Dogs just hit a nasty delay. Part of the development plan was for O (the artist) to hand over a lot of original art to Dern (me, the creator guy in the video) when we saw each other in May. This was supposed to take place at London Comic Con, because O lives in Colombia, and Dern lives in the USA. Shipping things in the past has been problematic, so we prefer doing things face-to-face.

Well, the UK has denied O's visa for London Comic Con, and this throws a huge monkey wrench into the works.

Let's boil it down to what this means if you're a Scurvy Dogs backer: If you ordered a package that includes original art from O, the earliest I can send out the art is in late July (after we see each other at ConnectiCon). I will be sending out the games without art, hopefully by the end of May (barring any other delays. For some reason, we didn't think that English Bureaucracy was a delay we needed to plan for, so clearly there are other pitfalls to beware of).

Again, we're really sorry about this delay.

No worries here! Although we may have you hang on to our copies of the game & ship them with the artwork - saves you extra shipping costs, plus we're also moving sometime at the end of May and it would be simpler to just have everything sent to the new address.

Sorry the UK's being difficult - wrecked travel plans always suck. :(

Another reason for me to detest my home nation. Honestly - come here with no qualifications or skills and we'll let you take our badly needed jobs, yet come over for a short visit with skills coming out the wazoo and we don't want your kind! It happens I guess, but very disappointed not to finally be seeing O.

Will there by a final notification before shipping? I am currently in the process of buying a house and our apartment lease is up at the end of May. I can't remember if we've given you an address yet or not but if it doesn't reach me by the end of May I may need to change the shipping address. I don't want to change anything yet though, don't want to jinx the house.
