My Bulgarian grandmother's hand-knit, wool socks will keep your toes warm and her community thriving.
Your pledge will help my Bulgarian grandmother and her friends establish a knitting center and launch the first line of Bloc Socks.
Bloc Socks are a hybrid between a wool sock and a house slipper. Every pair is hand-knit from local wool and made with a pattern that has been passed down in families for generations. All the styles below except the Valentina are available with a pledge at the 45-dollar level.
We have reached a 100 percent of our goal! Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to this project. Now, we are looking toward the future.
If we make 10,000 dollars we can hire a photographer to take professional pictures of all the socks the women make.
With 12,000 dollars we can hire a web developer to revamp our website and create a sustainable selling place for my grandmother and her friends.
Thanks again for all of your contributions!
The Bloc Socks project will establish a community knitting center in Patalenitsa where the women can meet-up, share patterns, and knit together. We will organize after-school programs at the center so children can learn how to knit and keep this tradition alive.
We plan to open the center in time for winter, giving the women a place to knit when the weather turns cold. By sending Bloc Socks as early holiday gifts to your friends and family, you can help us give an early New Year's present to the knitting women of Patalenitsa.
The Debut Line of Bloc Socks (all except Valentina available at 45 $ level)
1) The Dayko embodies the Bloc Sock style philosophy. It's an all wool, ankle-cut, unisex house sock that's comfortable, warm and durable.
2) The pattern for the Toepa is one of the most traditional in our first line. We plan to offer the style in a range of colors for both women and men, including tan and gold.
3) The Burgas is our indoor-outdoor model. The cable-knit, ankle-length slipper is thick and rugged enough to handle wood floors as well as the great outdoors.
4) We named Sofia after the capital of Bulgaria, and this feminine indoor-outdoor slipper features a classic web pattern and a deep rose color.
5) The calf-length Zora has stolen the spotlight with her rings of bright color and tiny heart-shaped openings.
6) Kalina is Zora's darker, more subtle sister. She's knit with more texture, deeper colors, and traditional bordering.
7) The feminine Meeka features a traditional pattern with a raised plume in front and two bands of purple woven around the ankle.
8) Varna has a name that comes from the sea but a pattern that comes from the leaves of Bulgaria's autumn trees. Here she is in traditional brown and tan.
9) The Sebas, like the Dayko, is a versatile, ankle-cut slipper. It features a traditional weave pattern in front and alternating rows along the sides.
10) The Nadya is a delicate house slipper with a distinguished collar at the ankle opening. Here we have it in gold and bronze.
11) Valentina takes a traditional Bloc Socks pattern up to the knees. This limited-edition sock is the tallest in the collection and the only one with tie-offs at the ankle and collar. It's available at the 60-dollar pledge level, or for fifteen extra dollars at any of the higher pledge levels.
Our limited-edition sweater for women. The Men's sweater is a cardigan with two low front pockets.
Our Hat and one of the three scarf options.
How does the sizing work?
Each pair of Bloc Socks covers three American shoe sizes. Our selection ranges from a US baby 3 to a US men's 12.
How does a martenitsa bring good luck?
On March first you pin the charm to your jacket or scarf and wear it until you see the first budding tree. Once you've spotted a bud, tie the charm to that branch for good luck. The holiday is called Baba Marta, or grandmother March, and it marks the beginning of spring.
How much selection will I have for the $35 offer?
We are giving out rewards at this level from a limited number of samples so we can't guarantee an exact model. What we can do is let you pick two colors that you do not want, as well as the size. At the next level up, you can select any style of Bloc Socks from our website!
Should I pledge additional money for shipping if I live overseas?
Yes, backers who live outside of the United States should pledge an additional $15 for shipping on all rewards over the $20 level.
What is this "friends and family" mailing list all about?
We'll treat you like family! You will be sent our most exclusive offers, starting with a special launch promotion at the end of the kickstarter campaign.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
