How the message and life of Jesus can be transformative in the 21st century.
How are relationships transformed?—our relationships with other people and with our environment?
What resources does Christianity have to aid transformation? And are these resources enough, given the checkered history of the church?
Take as one example—a notable problem plaguing our species is tribalism. Raiding and war for resources and territory has gone on for tens of thousands of years and possibly longer. Furthermore, in documented history, religion has played an active role in conflict. And today, Christianity often promotes an insider-outsider mentality.
There is, however, an inbuilt critique seen in the life of Jesus and the gospel story. It is difficult to read and interact with the accounts of Jesus without noticing his relational integrity with and love for outsiders—for people on the fringes of society, for people whom society shuns and excludes. This book will draw on such resources.
I have taught and written on this topic for 20 years. My aim is to produce a book that will explore ways in which the gospel message in the 21st century can be transformative in a variety of contexts—from transforming a relationship between two people—to transforming a relationship between two societies—to transforming the way we treat the world and its resources. The book will aim to show that the message and life of Jesus has transformative power today.
The title—why “chasing the wind”?
As many will know, the Bible compares the Spirit of God to the wind. So chasing the wind is a suitable image. It also captures the idea of being beyond grasp and that the process of transformation is ongoing. In addition, we can view the title another way. Some communities in their quest for transformation end up exclusive, legalistic, and mean. In these cases, they have been “chasing the wind” in the usual sense of the phrase. The book will unpack reasons why some communities end up like this.
Length of the book
Approximately 150-200 pages
A physical book
Although electronic books are rapidly growing in popularity, we will also produce a physical book because, in part, churches and small group studies still often use print books. For those who want to use it in groups, we will add discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
