Kickstarter

Up in the heavens, lazily lounging on a throne made from a woven network of glittering stars, God was bored. After thousands of years of taking great interest in his creations down on Earth, he had suddenly found himself nodding off during wars. The religious holidays, which always used to fascinate him, were now excuses to go take a walk through the cosmos, or play fetch with his celestial pets. Even the trials and tribulations of the individuals, the loves lost and gained, friendships made and torn apart, no longer brought more than a passing glance. He’d seen it all before.

            There just wasn’t any creativity any more. His subjects seemed uninspired, too willing to fritter their lives away in front of their television sets. As he watched the growth of mass media, and saw tabloids and gossip rags flying off the shelves while the great works of history sat unread, it soon became clear to him that his people were no longer interested in fulfilling their destinies. It was easier to live their lives through other people; to ride on the coattails of the actors and actresses, athletes and stars that dominated their fantasies.

            Too often now he would listen in on the conversations of his people, and instead of talking about their own lives they would be discussing the doings of someone else, someone they had never even met. They had taken on his own role, that of observing and judging from afar.

Thus begins the novel that I have tentatively titled A Bored God's Wrath. I've been working on this story for close to three years now, and have amassed some eighty-thousand words. The plot dominates my every waking moment, and the main characters (two brothers named Jack and Aaron) have become my closest friends.

The idea behind this Kickstarter project is to allow myself to take a 4-month leave-of-absence from work in order to finally finish this novel. As an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction I truly believe that this work will be very well received, if I can ever find the time to truly devote myself to it and give it the undivided attention that it deserves. Four months of constant writing and polishing should be enough to put me over the hump, as I'm a very prolific writer when given the chance.

As I previously mentioned, the plot follows the adventures of two brothers, who one day awake to a world that has fundamentally changed. The technologies upon which their lives had revolved around suddenly no longer function. Monsters roam their formerly quiet neighborhoods, the earth itself reshapes itself without warning, and powers which had previously been confined to the pages of fantasy novels begin to manifest in themselves and their fellows. Even the sky itself is different, having taken on a sullen, reddish hue.

The story is, at first, simply a hectic record of the brother's attempt to survive. As they become more accustomed to their new world, and come to grips with the benefits and limits of their new powers, the Penny brothers eventually embark on a journey of adventure and discovery. Along the way they form lasting friendships, encounter and defeat many vile and strange enemies, and begin a narrative with their creator that will eventually lead them and their world towards a path of redemption.
