Update #7: Here we go again ...
DID YOU KNOW? The Aylsmere Apartments were so named to evoke an Olde English lineage, but it appears no such place actually exists in England!
The app has been a hit! From the good ol’ USA to Italy, from Norway to Canada, from Australia to Belgium, from Malaysia to France, from India to Japan, people are exploring the Upper West Side with LW’s iPhone walking tour app. So guess what … we’re ready to do it all again! But this time, you get to help decide where our tour takes us!
DID YOU KNOW? The statue of composer Verdi in his eponymous Square is surrounded by four figures, each representing a character from one of his operas.
We want to hear from you! What would you like to see in a second app from LW!? Have a hankering for more information on the area highlighted in our first app? Is there another West Side enclave that you’re dying to learn more about? Tell us what you think!
Update #6: Drum roll please ... the iPhone app is complete!

Update #5: Today, first round mockups of app!
First came the funding campaign ...
On August 17, 2010, LANDMARK WEST! announced the launch of its Kickstarter online funding campaign to raise monies for the first ever iPhone walking tour app of the Upper West Side. For 35 fun, maraca-filled days, we shared our project far and wide, along the way inspiring over 50 people to back our project. $3,285 later, the campaign has been a tremendous success!
Now, let's build this app!
Today, LANDMARK WEST! staff is excited to report that our iPhone app developer will be unveiling to us the first round of designs and schematics for this one-of-a-kind West Side iPhone tool. From there, we'll work through the kinks, think through more content and functionality questions, and continue on!
Things are moving along! We couldn't have gotten to this point without the support of each and every one of our backers (52 of our most favorite people ever!). Thank you so much, from the bottom of our fiesty LANDMARK WEST! heart!
Stay tuned as the app project develops! For more updates, on this and other LANDMARK WEST! projects, check out our Twitter feed (@landmarkwest) and our Facebook page (facebook.com/landmark.west).
Update #4: Together, we did it!
WE'VE MET OUR GOAL!
Thank you (thank you, thank you ...) to each and every one of our 45 backers. Because of your support, we've reached our $3,000 goal to fund the West Side's first iPhone walking tour app! The Office Maracas are all a-tizzy with excitement and celebration!
But wait -- BREAKING NEWS! While typing this update, we've received another pledge! It's happening! We're at $3,025 ... and counting. With one week left, let's see how far we can go. Keep sharing the project around and please keep inspiring others to pledge.
And again, THANK YOU for believing in our idea and helping us to make it a reality.
Update #3: $1K hurdle cleared!
And the Office Maracas are going wild!!! We've crossed the $1,000 threshold and are up to 37% of our goal ($3,000). And we still have 28 days to go!
Profuse and unending thanks to all of our backers who found inspiration in our project and pledged their support. As the campaign continues to gain momentum (and pledges!), we've begun evaluating potential iPhone app developers. Who can take the LANDMARK WEST! mission and aesthetic (let's be honest, we want this to look gooooood!) and the latest in iPhone technology and seamlessly weave them together to produce an app worthy of "first ever" status? Exciting decisions to be made!

LANDMARK WEST! is an award-winning non-profit community organization working to preserve the best of the Upper West Side’s architectural heritage from 59th to 110th Street between Central Park West and Riverside Drive. Since 1985, we have worked to achieve New York City landmark status for nearly 2,700 individual buildings and historic districts (up from only 337 in 1985), help residents and business to be skilled stewards of the built environment, and to safeguard the integrity of New York’s Landmarks Law.
