A multimedia ebook for the iPad and a PDF version that gives the reader the experience of taking a hands-on Letterpress Workshop.
After the success of our Midway Midget 1893 letterpress cards Kickstarter project we would like to create, with your help, a multimedia ebook for the iPad that gives the reader the experience of taking one of my hands-on Letterpress Workshops. Imagine a rotating composing stick or sort of type that is controlled on the iPad with your finger! The goal would be to make this ebook available in the Apple iBookstore for the iPad as well as to backers together with a PDF version for use on any computer.
I have been teaching letterpress for eight years in Virginia and DC. To date I have had 132 hands-on workshops with 243 students with one or two students at a time. All of the letterpress printed rewards were printed by me in very limited quantities and can be seen in the above movie. My son Nathan is an artist and the computer guy who will help me put this together as the designer of the ebook.
Why do we need funding? In order to make this work we need better studio lighting for our photography, an external microphone for the video, some software, a turntable to photograph and create rotating objects, and expenses for travel to other printing studios to capture video on how other presses work.
We are impressed with the iPad as a learning platform. With Apple's recent distribution of the iBooks Author software we have the chance to do something exciting with the ever growing popularity of letterpress printing.
All rewards will include copies of the ebook in all of the formats we come up with including PDF for all computers and multimedia for the iPad. The letterpress items will be available immediately after the project is funded but the ebook will take at least until September, 2012 to complete.
