Till by Turning is the collective effort of violist Amy Cimini, violinist Erica Dicker, pianist Emily Manzo, and bassoonist and composer Katherine Young -- four creative performers who work as educators, scholars, songwriters and improvisers.

Katherine began working on Four Chambered Heart in 2008. She models her piece after Olivier Messiaen’s 1941 Quartet for the End of Time, addressing Messiaen’s musical and spiritual preoccupations in a personal idiom that embraces 21st-century extended techniques, distortion, noise and improvisation. Over the course of eight movements, Four Chambered Heart activates each member’s musical strengths, which encompass otherworldly singing, electronic processing and unique improvisatory styles, to create a work that testifies to Till by Turning’s fiercely collaborative ethos.  

Till by Turning has big plans for Four Chambered Heart in 2012 and 2013. The first step is to record the complete work at the Klangbad studio. Step two is to release this recording on the Klangbad imprint in 2013. Finally, in step three, we celebrate the release with a world premier performance, featuring original video art by Paul Rowley, on the Music at First series in Brooklyn.

Joachim Irmler, founding keyboardist of Krautrock titans Faust, is the creative force behind Klangbad, a recording studio built in a converted paper mill overlooking the Danube. Till by Turning has been part of the Klangbad family since 2009, when we performed at the studio's biannual festival alongside Oneida, FSK, Dalek and others.

In addition to funding the release of the album on its imprint in 2013, Klangbad has generously donated studio time for Till by Turning to record Four Chambered Heart.

There are still some costs associated with the recording, and we have to get ourselves to the studio! In all, we need to raise $3000 to see this piece and this recording project through to completion.

And so, we ask you, lovers of genre-defying music and riveting live performance, to help fund our journey from New York to Scheer and our recording work this August so that we can make the most of this amazing opportunity. Katherine has received support for this project from the Sparkplug Foundation, but we have not yet met our funding goal. Your help bringing this long-standing project to fruition would mean so much to us. We are going to make a powerful and utterly singular recording this summer. Thank you!
