I am currently working with others to bring an Organic Grocery store to Bed-Stuy. I have over 8 years of retail bookkeeping experience primarily keeping track of profit and loss. Graduated from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus in 2003 with a Bachelor's of Arts.
Man I wish this had succeeded ladies, so sorry it didn't. But, this is an opportunity to reframe and strategize, how to make it happen.
Hey, people are entitled to their opinions. However, most humans seem to kinow that the need to eat crosses all socio-economic barriers and ages. I'm a long time Bed-Stuy resident, of over 50 years, and I've never witnessed any grocery store that dscriminates against the type of people it serves because the goal is to provide a product or service to anyone who is interested. I truly believe the intent of Organic Bed-Stuy is to provide much needed healthy food product choices that are affordable and longterm. If in reaching this goal, it equates to a change in Bed-Stuy, it is a welcome change that will combat bad eating habits, obesity and all health related diseases that are caused by obesity and foods that have poisened residence of Bed-Stuy for many many years and continue to do so. Just because folks have resided in Bed-Stuy for many years, as I have again, doesn't mean that we don't welcome change, espeically one as healthy and positive as Organic Bed-Stuy. KUDOS TO THEM. I WISH THE STORE WOULD OPEN TODAY. I'D PLEDGE MY HEART IF IT WAS POSSIBLE; HOWEVER, IT'S NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AFTER CONSUMMING ALL THE UNHEALTHY FOODS THAT THE STORES IN BED-STUY HAVE BEEN OFFERING OVER THE YEARS.
Hey this project seems well intentioned but also highly offensive. Food justice is an important issue for me, but your video comes off really condescending and offensive to certain groups of immigrants as well as people with a lower economic status than yourselves, which is why as much as i believe that healthy food should be made available to all, and Bed Stuy could really use some help with that; I can't pledge any money to this project. I think you may be going about this the wrong way. It seems like your project is more interested in serving the new colonizers of Brooklyn rather than the already existing community. Which is really unfortunate for everyone. I hope that you will consider taking the time to become a part of the already existing community rather than trying to cleanse or change it.
Here's one enthusiastic vote for the Bedford/Greene location. I'm not sure what the other two options are, but with all the recent activity in the northwest region of Bed-Stuy (Black Swan, Nero Doro, Tiger Lily, Nice), I think that would be a perfect spot. I can certainly guarantee that I'd be a frequent customer.
We need to get the word out! Only 46 days to go!! Where are the bigger backers? Peaches, Bread-Stuy, Saragina??
