The Cobra Wallet

We are entrepreneurs and frequent travelers. Josh works day to day with CAD models to bring hardware designs to life. Alex works day to day with product design and software.

We spent years searching for the perfect wallet and since we couldn't find it, we decided to design it ourselves. The Cobra Wallet has fine curves, designed to match your phone. It's under half an inch thin and can hold at least 8 cards and a couple bills.

The wallet is inspired by the industrial design of modern mobile devices and our experiences with using over a dozen different wallets and card cases. Now let's take a look at specific areas of the wallet.

The Form Factor and Materials

Most phones either have a curved back or a very thin profile. These form factors help minimize the phone’s outline in the pant pocket. We chose to go with the back curved form factor for the wallet, because it does two things: 1) the curved part hides well from the outside perspective by reducing pant creases, and 2) the flat part holds well against the leg. By having one side flat, the wallet is held consistently in the pocket, so when you take it out you'll know in what order to expect the cards without thinking about it!

The Cobra Wallet has two 316 stainless steel cores for rigidity, corrosion resistance, and RFID protection. The stainless steel is spring tempered to allow the wallet to flex and snap back into the right shape. The cores also form the hinge and clasp so you can be sure that they will last. The cores are covered with a unique plastic material called thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which is commonly used in cell phone cases. TPU is the perfect material for a wallet! A plastic material that is flexible yet is durable and has excellent resistance to abrasion, oils, and grease. This plastic skin gives the Cobra Wallet its curved shape, smooth finish, and a perfect fit in the pocket.

The Cards

Based on our research and experimentation over the past 2 years, the wallet has to accommodate at least 8 cards. Eight cards is enough for most situations. The flexible bumpers on the sides of the wallet prevent the cards from rattling no matter how many cards are carried.

Easy Access

We’ve tried over a dozen different business/credit card cases and wallets, new and old. Most of them require you to take out all the cards and shuffle through them to find the card you need. This attracts attention and takes time. When you open the Cobra Wallet, your 2 most used cards are on top for quick access. If you need to shuffle through the rest of the cards, you can slide them onto the open top cover inside the wallet, or you can easily pop the full card stack into or out of the wallet base.

Cash and Bills

While cards are a popular method of payment, it’s good to have some cash for emergencies. We added a hidden compartment inside the Cobra Wallet to hold a few bills. This secret compartment is inside the top cover of the wallet. You can also use this compartment for a key, a memory card, or anything else you might want to keep in your wallet.

Colors

We want the Cobra Wallet to make a statement. It should match your phone, your style, and your personality! You can choose from any of the colors we have available: royal blue, orange soda, sizzling red, arctic white, and the limited edition of Kickstarter Green.

Compliment Your Phone

When we say that the Cobra Wallet compliments your phone, we don’t mean just in looks. We designed the Cobra Wallet to let you stabilize and hold your phone for watching videos and taking pictures. It works whether you have an iPhone or an Android. It even works if your phone is in a case!

Pair your wallet with your phone to watch a video hands free on a desk or table, share with friends and even take a picture or video with the help of your Cobra Wallet!

Personalize Your Wallet

The back of the wallet contains a metallic opening, which is perfect for engraving. So you can take the wallet to a local shop that does engraving and have a truly personalized wallet. Our favorite is the gold electroplated Cobra Wallet with a black laser engraving!

What's Next

The Cobra Wallet requires four fabrication tools to be built for mass production; two sets of stamping dies for the two stainless steel cores, and two sets of injection mold tools to encapsulate the stainless steel cores with thermoplastic polyurethane and complete the top and bottom overmolded components that make up the Cobra Wallet. The tools are expensive, but we have found manufactures in Asia that are lined up to produce the tooling and the components that we need.

Where You Come In

We had high quality prototypes manufactured using real stainless steel and polyurethane materials to test out the design and have been using them for weeks! With a few tweaks to the prototypes to update the logo, adjust the phone stops, and accommodate 2 additional cards the final design is completed and ready for production tooling! With your help we can hit the minimum order needed to manufacture the first run of Cobra Wallets.
