The story of Sonia, an astrophysics student who’s internet boy, an aging Malibu trust fund baby flies her out for the weekend to lose her virginity.
Here's the thing:
I was spinning one of those earring things at Claire's boutique when I heard these lyrics pumped into the store, "When I grow up, I wanna be famous. I wanna be in movies... When I grow up, be on TV. People know me. Be on magazines." I looked around. And all these little girls were mouthing those words. Trying on tiara's and long gloves, spraying their necks with Britney's perfume.
It was a little frightening.
The idea that so many people out there are dreaming of results... like accepting Golden Globes or performing at the MTV awards, but instead of locking themselves in their basement or a rehearsal room or the garden behind their neighbor's house which can easily double as a stage,
trying to figure out how to improve their acting, dancing, or singing,
they're out trying on tiara's.
Constructing elaborate fantasies. Building up unearned confidence.
Some performers/artists wake up from this dream, and get to work.
Others let their fantasies last their entire lives, and when the world rejects them, they blame the world not their lack of work or unwillingness to grow, to expand their comfort zone.
This play explores a more realistic take on the rags to riches scenario. The anti-Glitter, if you will.
The Play Process:
So far, it's been read out loud in private readings to great success.
I can't wait to get it up on its feet and in front of an audience.
For those of you unfamiliar with the new play process, a new play goes through a series of staged readings and workshops before it is submitted to companies or fully produced. This is step two in that sequence.
What I need from you:
I'm looking to raise $250, to pay for decent rehearsal space in Brooklyn.
If we can reach this mark, the performances will be July 17th @ 4pm and July 19th @ 7pm. And the performances will be totally free, followed by a talk back (in which you may respond to the play. what you liked/what you didn't like/what you'd like to know more about/if you were confused at any point)
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
