Projecteo shipping update
I hope this finds you well. Last week, we received our last set of samples from the factory. In an ideal world, we would have signed off on one of these samples, bagged it up and sent it back to the factory as a benchmark for all the other units produced. This enables some form of quality control that ensures the mass produced units are at the standard we expect throughout the production cycle.
Aesthetically, the samples are lovely. The top half has a shiny glossy white finish to it while the bottom is a subtle, slightly textured matte grey. As you may have seen on Facebook, we recently received confirmation of the Projecteo trademark. This meant we could also go ahead with getting the logo machined into the base, which looks pretty awesome.
However, upon taking the samples to bits and inspecting the electronics in more detail, it appeared that the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) had in fact changed quite significantly. The shape of the board had changed and components had been swapped around. Most crucially, the switch that operates Projecteo’s LED had been re-specced without our consent. This made the on/off button sit slightly lower in its top shell and at a slight angle.
According to our production facility, the reason for these changes is because they are outsourcing the manufacture of the boards to a PCB manufacturing company in Shenzen. So far, our factory had been producing all samples in house at low volumes. These samples are the first we received from the final PCB manufacturer who has the ability to manufacture these at scale.
If I had signed off on these samples, we could have started mass production of the units and had them by February 7 to start the fulfillment process. However, I didn’t want to sign off on a product that:
1: Had a chance to be lower quality
2: Was different from what we had originally specced.
The original PCB manufacturer has now closed for the Chinese New Year (February 10) and estimates we will not be able to receive new samples until the March 1. This wasn’t really an option for us, so our factory has had to find a new PCB manufacturer that is able to get new samples to us sooner. We should be receiving these samples in the next few days. If these samples are good and we sign off on them before the February 18, it will take 14 days to produce the new batch of PCBs, 7-10 days for final assembly and 3-6 days for the bulk shipment to New York.
This means our first batch of Projecteos should arrive on the March 18 at the absolute latest. I can only apologise for this delay and hope you can understand that it was a decision taken in order to produce the best product we possibly can.
We’re currently looking into any other means we can possibly get a smaller batch to us sooner than the above date and it's looking likely that we can. I’ll keep you updated on how this is goes. As always, drop me a line if you have any questions and have an awesome day.
