The face is horizontal, as if Lady Liberty is lying down, sinking into the grass. Viewers can walk, climb, and slide down the face.
Face of Liberty is a one to one scale replica of the the face Statue of Liberty. Unlike the famous Bartholdi statue, the face orients horizontally, as if Lady Liberty is lying down, sinking into the grass. Viewers can stare directly into the face of the Statue of Liberty up close, a viewpoint not possible on Liberty Island.
Face of Liberty will be on view on Governors Island (right across from Liberty Island) in New York Harbor every Saturday and Sunday from June 9 to September 23, 2012 as part of the Figment Festival's Interactive Sculpture Garden.
Framed in wood and finished with resin, the sturdiness of the piece allows viewers young and old to walk, sit, climb, and slide down the gentle rises and slopes of the facial features.
The face measures 16 feet from cheek to cheek and 25 feet from chin to the back of the crown. The central spike of the crown rises 10 feet into the air. The nose and hair rise three feet off the ground, which is an ideal height for children to roam over the head.

The whole piece will be painted with metallic copper paint and an acid activator, which will create the same green patina that coats the Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty is Bartoldhi's monument to America in 1886, The Face of Liberty is my monument to America in 2012.
This project, as with pretty much every project I've ever done, is a massive undertaking. The Figment Festival and Sculpture Space in Utica, NY have already supported portions of the project. However, making a faithful reproduction of an object that already exists is difficult process, much less something that will take the beating that the general public and exposure to the elements all summer long.
Your contributions go a long way to covering cost for heavy duty materials, (resin, foam, lumber, paint, sealer, concrete, steel etc), transportation, and studio space to ultimately finish the project and get it installed on Governors Island.
Thanks for your support.
