Update #7: Field Guide printed
... and will be shipping this week to all our backers. Thank you for waiting patiently. We learned a lot this summer at the field lab in the South Bronx and tried to incorporate as much as we can. Enjoy!

Update #6: Opening Party
For those in New York City, please join us for a gathering at the Phytoremediation Field Lab at La Finca del Sur in the South Bronx. Saturday, September 10, 5 -8 pm (138th Street and Grand Concourse)
looking forward to seeing you!
Update #5: Field Day
The infographics at La Finca are up and went through their first test with a tour as part of the American Community Garden Association conference. Not enough time to talk to everyone, who was interested, but there will be more opportunity throughout September and October. The installation out of paper tubes also had to withstand its first thunderstorm last night just as we were setting up. Save the date for September 10th, when we will have a proper opening.
Update #4: building the exhibit
We have been working hard in the past week to build all the pieces of the exhibit at La Finca. Can't wait to start installing next week. Some of the infographics are still in the works, but the Sonotubes are getting close. We have been trying to carefully select only materials that are biodegradable and do not add any more toxic stuff to the already struggling soil at La Finca. the wood for the seating is untreated spruce -FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, the paint is dairy-based from the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company. We coated everything with non-toxic sealer called watershield from Safecoat. We are treating the edges with JVCC Cello, which is a biodegradable cellulose tape. We want the exhibit to survive a few thunderstorms, but not impact the soil once we leave it to itself.
Update #3: Close to the finish line
5 days to go and we are in production mode. thanks for all the positive feedback and generous support. Almost there!! We harvested a giant mustard plant this week and sent it to a lab to see, what the first batch plants did for the soil. (Do not ever copy what you see in the picture below and touch highly toxic material with your bare hands!)
I gave a talk about the project at onelab last week (thank you terreform one for inviting me) and another one is scheduled for September 6th at Bard College.
Until then, we will be busy designing information graphics, preparing the papertubes and adding more pages to the field guide.
Meanwhile, La Finca del Sur is bustling with events from health-related classes to open-mic sessions.
