Murphy is my first feature, an experiment in narrative, built entirely of improv, true humans, real places, organic moments and deamons
This past fall, I was lucky enough to direct my first feature film with a collection of beautiful actors and richly unique true-to-life characters playing themselves. Through an experimental process of creation, my collaborators and I bridged the forms of documentary and narrative to create our own hybrid that would show the simple story of a man with dissociative identity disorder. We utilized a "one-take" rule and allowed the space for intense characterization and improvisation within a strict narrative scene structure. This provided us with rich, un-manufactured moments between characters, but has left us with the daunting, and exhilarating task to edit down HOURS and HOURS of footage to find the exact story we want to tell. We shot on two Super VHS cameras from 1992, and were interested in capturing that "overly curious" fly-on-the-wall, almost uncomfortable "home video" feel. For my generation, the VHS "look" is integral to generating a sense of nostalgia, of childhood...a place this character has never moved from.
Murphy's story asks us to look at the thin line between sickness and just one's natural disturbia. We are all disturbed on some level, but have different outlets. Perhaps a disorder sums one up too quickly, when it is much more involved.
Starring: Jason Yamas, Ronald Peet, Rebecca Robertson, Raina Von Valdenberg, Lloyd Lisk, Christina Lisk, Mariella Mosthoff, Pat Hall
Up until now, I have invested my personal funds into this project, but now we NEED YOUR SUPPORT to finish our edit, design an original sound mix, lay down a color correction and get a transfer of the footage from VHS to a widescreen cut without any quality or information loss...not to me mention FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS!
I believe movies are supposed to tell stories. I love experimentation within the process and video art and utilizing music video "worlds" within this, but narrative is my driving force. This movie is an opportunity for several talented young, trained actors who worked side by side with several every-day people (non-actors) to find something authentic between them and build a fictional world together. I want people to see it. To live in a world that did not come from a script and thus did not pay patronage to a 110 page document, but rather to what was ACTUALLY happening moment-to-moment.
Please help me get this into as many screening rooms and theaters as possible, across the world!
EVEN IF YOU CAN GIVE A DOLLAR. IT WILL BE WELL SPENT!
