Why shark nets are a bad idea

Update #7 · Aug 6, 2012 · comment

Why shark nets are pointless (short clip) from skyler thomas on Vimeo.

Sharks have aggregation sites and thanks to research we have a great insight as to where these sites are. All we have to do as humans is share the planet and not choose to swim at every single beach on earth. Instead, when one of the 7 billion people on this planet is attacked by a shark, there is a public outcry to hunt the sharks or put up more nets.
In this short clip from the Price of Existence, South African marine biologist Ryan Johnson explains just how specific the areas are that sharks tend to hang out; thus indicating that they are avoidable if we choose to make an effort on our part.

Why?

Update #6 · Jul 19, 2012 · comment

'The Price of Existence' asks the question "Why?" a lot. Why is a protected species not actively being protected by the very laws that are support to save it from poachers and fishermen? When an attack occurs at a beach where sharks are known to inhabit, why are the sharks hunted and nets put up instead of simply choosing not to swim at that beach? Why are TV shows allowed to treat a threatened species like a lab rat when no one else is allowed to touch them? In the case of the white shark, it all comes down to money.  'The Price of Existence' tells this story of life, death, money, and the white shark through film.

White sharks still being killed in broad daylight

Update #5 · Jul 13, 2012 · comment

My friends in South Africa and New Zealand continue to post pictures on Facebook of fishermen bringing in white sharks in broad daylight and posing with them on camera.  This is the very type of activity my film intends to highlight.  How are they getting away with it?

Andre Hartman and Dirk Schmidt also to appear in the film.

Update #4 · Jul 6, 2012 · comment

The original shark man, Andre Hartman, who pioneered free diving with white sharks will be appearing in the film.

Dr. Dirk Schmidt, wildlife photographer and author of two books on the white shark, will be sharing his experiences with the animal in Cape Town.
