About this project

Support the next big thing in radio production! Live spoken competition -- the slam -- meets cool radio producers in what will be the world's second-ever audio slam! Not only that, support high school students from Portland, Maine, the ones who launched this incredibly cool idea!

Following the smashing success of our Audio Slam Throwdown at the Great Northeast Radio Rally, Blunt Youth Radio has been invited to bring our new, refined Audio Slam 2.0 to New York City for the Digital Waves Youth Media Festival, July 30, 2011. The hosts of the Digital Waves event, WNYC Radio Rookies, have offered us partial funding, but we need more in order to bring the full Slam crew to New York. Your contributions will fund our travel and stay in New York.

Blunt Youth Radio launched the prototype of the audio slam, a competitive event for spoken word audio producers in January. The slam was a huge success, attracting 26 radio producers of all ages coming from as far as New York City and as rural as Belfast, Maine, all competing for a $500 prize. Judging the slam were five media professionals from public radio, print media, journalism school and video production. For the slam, each producer enters 4 minutes of produced audio. The entries are played and judged live at the Slam in a series of one-minute rounds. The audio slam is an exciting new forum for spoken word audio producers. You can learn about how the slam worked by checking out the Public Radio Maker's Quest 2.0 blog: http://mq2.org/blunt-audioslam-2011.

Blunt Youth Radio has been bringing the voices of high school aged young people -- both free and incarcerated -- to the airwaves since 1994 through a weekly, call in public affairs talk show. We're one of the longest running youth radio programs in the USA, thanks to the steadfast support of WMPG FM Greater Portland Community Radio from the University of Southern Maine. We take our mission of youth empowerment through direct media access seriously, and young people really do run the show at Blunt. Youth in Blunt choose the topics for the shows, host, report, do all the audio production and engineer the broadcasts for the weekly show. Blunt's tiny staff provide training, contacts and support to the members. Work by Blunt members has aired on Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, This American Life, the BBC and many community and public stations around the country thanks to our participation in the Public Radio Exchange -- PRX.org
