Zony Mash: The Name
First thanks to all who have contributed. We are getting there but we got a long ways to go. The big contributions are much appreciated but we also encourage people to simply buy the CD. Zony Mash CDs each sold many thousands of copies, we only need to sell a few hundred at the $20 (double cd) level to reach our goal. Thanks for spreading the word.
Zony Mash-The Name.
Folks wonder where the name Zony Mash came from. Zony Mash is the title of a Meters tune. Here’s how it happened. My friend, the theater director Mark Lutwak, found a pile of Meters 45s from the Josie label at a yard sale and gave them to me as a gift. They were laying around my studio on my desk for a couple of years, I always liked the look of them.
I decided to start a new quartet for a couple of reasons.
(1) I wanted to play more Hammond B-3, I had played a little bit in Naked City and Pigpen but I was really a piano player and a synthesizer player. In fact my first attempts at some of the early music were with Stew Cutler on guitar (from my band The President), Jerome Harris on bass and a drummer who I was working with on a Fontella Bass record I was producing at the time. I was in NYC making the record, there was a B-3 in the studio, and I took a few hours to try out a couple of tunes. That’s a great record by the way, Lester Bowie and David Sanborn are on it. Harvey Brooks plays bass (Bitches Brew, Highway 61 Revisited etc. ect.). Its called “No Ways Tired” and is on Nonesuch Records. You can find it on google but check this out from 1966.
(2) Ultimately though I wanted to try this with Tim Young, who I didn’t really know but I was curious about. This, of course, turned out to be life-changing. Tim has become one of my favorite and most important musical partners.
(3) I was about to become a father for the second time, and I wanted a project that wouldn’t go on the road but would get me out of the house once a week and making music-so I approached the OK Hotel about leaving my B-3 on stage and doing a regular Tuesday night.
But I needed a name. Diane who booked the OK Hotel kept calling me and asking me what I was gonna call the new project and I just couldn’t come up with anything. Finally there on my desk, facing me directly was a 7 inch with the words Zony Mash on it. I had no intention of giving the impression that we were trying to follow in the footsteps of the Meters, but the band was exactly the same instrumentation, and of course they have been a huge inspiration.
The funny thing is there are a lot of Meter’s tunes I have loved over the years but this wasn’t one of them. Only recently, when I actually took the time to learn it for another project, did I come to really appreciate it. It’s a pretty cool tune.
